To friends of Richard Bowyer (DrivingMissLazy), we are very sad to announce his passing yesterday, Sept. 18, 2008. His health had been failing the last couple of months, though he never really let on how bad it was. Within the past month, he has passed out and fallen at least half a dozen times, but was always better after he put his oxygen on. He got out of the shower yesterday and started to feel dizzy, which was a sign he could pass out. He laid himself down on the floor to prevent himself from falling. His wife, Janet thought she heard a noise coming from the bathroom and went to check on him. He said he was OK, he just needed to rest a minute. His daughter, Linda asked if he needed his oxygen and he said he didn't know where it was. He was starting to look dazed and didn't really know where he was. His granddaughter, Hilary called 911. By the time the ambulance got to the house, he wasn't talking and was starting to shake. They performed CPR, but he had no pulse. They got a faint pulse and decided to take him to the hospital. When the doctor came out, they said he was gone. They had worked on him for half an hour and even if he was revived, he would have severe brain damage. The doctor said that most likely the faint pulse the paramedics got at the house was just an arhythmia (?), which is just something the heart does. He died around 2pm. He was 77 years old and is survived by his wife, Janet, daughters Shawna and Linda, son, Royce, grandchildren, Hilary and Travis and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Riley and Mackenzie. Richard was the creator of the successful Atlas ShorPower product line. He was a family man who made all his employees feel like a part of the family. He was also one of the best electrical and mechanical engineers. He had a passion for creating things. He had restored over eighteen antique and classic cars from a 1911 Model T, eight Model A cars from 1928-31, cars from the 50's and 60's to off-road vehicles. He never stopped working on things, but he never forgot his family. He was also a big flirt and all the girls were his "honey". I just want to let everyone know how much he enjoyed these boards. He was always telling us stories or jokes he heard from everyone here. If we didn't know where he was, all we had to do was look in the office, and there he was at the computer, typing away. He really did enjoy talking to all of you. As per his wishes, there will be no service. Anyone wishing to send a card or flowers to Janet or his family may do so at this address: Bowyer Family 575 Parkersburg Road Spencer, WV 25276 I want to thank you all for the joy you brought him, even after he lost his own bus. He really loved these boards and talking to everyone. He will be greatly missed. R.I.P. Richard (Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa) Nov. 16, 1931 - Sept. 18, 2008 We Love You Thanks, Hilary |

Paula & I want to add our condolences and prayers to Richard's family and friends. We consider it an honor to have personally met and become good friends with Richard & Janet. They attended the very first Bussin' rally (and many of the other ones also). Richard will be missed, but he will not be forgotten. Jack & Paula PS: I guess I need to give a nice long blast on the train whistle that I got from Richard |

Richard will be missed. He was a valued resource! I met Richard at the first T'ville rally...nice guy. Rather than buses, we talked about old cars. He was quite knowledgeable about antique cars. Interesting guy! Our prayers are with Richard's family. JR and Terri Lynch |

Thank you for letting us know of Richard's passing. Too often someone stops posting and we never know why. We will miss Richard's presence, whether that was on the boards as lately, or at rallys as in the past. He had a wealth of knowledge which he shared freely. I know he is in good company now and we pray that God will comfort & look after his family. |

I have enjoyed Richard's post for many years on the boards. He both had invalueable information to pass along and a number of great stories of his adventures with the 4104 and the eagle. I also had the privelege to e mail him personally. He talked about Oceano sand dunes that I can relate to. I have spent years there, I am sure we have seen each other, maybe even talked, at the very least waved to each other. He mentioned cars a couple times but I did not know he had restored so many, that would have been another area that would have been great fun to have talked with him. I like Laryn do not know how to express in words the loss of such a compassion and great man.It has been a great privelege to have gained some of his wisdom and great knowledge. Seeing his handle Driving Miss Lazy always made me laugh. Someone once asked him about how the name came to be, it also showed his sence of humor. Daily, I looked for his post as I always knew I was going to learn something new. Thank you Richard you will be greatly missed!!! My heart goes out to his family. |

It is with great sadness to hear of Richards passing. He was always so full of knowledge and willing to share it with anyone that needed it. I have never met him but respected his thoughts about anything he wrote about. Thanks for letting us know about the passing of Richard. My deepest sympathy to his family. Bill |

Jack Campbell wrote: "I never met Richard, but always looked forward to reading his post here on the net. He always had something good to say and lots of information to pass on." Yes, and he was always a gentleman. (That's common here but it's always appreciated and Richard was one of the best.) "I will miss reading his post as I am sure everyone else will." Very true. |

To Hilary & family, As you have seen from the responses, your grandfather had many fans and friends on the bulletin boards. And I proudly count myself within that number. Richard posted nearly 2,100 messages here, his last on September 8, and there are many amongst us who have learned part of what we know from him; some of us, most of what we know. Such is the legacy he has left behind him in this bus conversion enthusiast community. He was one of the first who ever posted here, too. For that, I am forever indebted to him. On a more personal note, you may know that Richard and I had many a conversation via email. He was ever watchful of this web site, too - something, as probably most things in his life, he volunteered to do, and it was always a relief when he'd email to tell me there was a conversation that was becoming inappropriate for the topic or that he found the web site not working properly. Fortunately, I have been able to thank him on numerous occasions, but wish I was able to do so again. If the rest of Richard's life was as meaningful to others as it has been to this small group of friends, then he left this world a much better place. I never quite knew how profound the masthead of this bulletin board would become when I wrote, many years ago, that "Everything that was ever said lives forever, right here...". So, rest assured, others will continue to learn from Richard for a long, long time. And, Hilary, if you ever need to hear your grandfather's words, if time begins to soften his voice in your mind, and you need a reminder, please feel free to come back here, because you will be amongst family and we'd love to hear from you.
