I was driving south (headed for New London), & saw something amazing: in a convoy were about 15-20 school buses! The first & last bus were dog-nose Internationals (T444E & DT466E, respectively), all the others were front-engine flat noses. All were Blue Birds, with no district lettering & dealer or transporter plates. They were CRUISING, too--I had my cruise control set at 75MPH in my truck, & I wasn't gaining quickly. They were running at 65-70MPH! I was amazed at how quiet the flat-noses were: they were obviously diesels, but they were as quiet as some gassers I've heard. The DT466 dog-nose was pretty quiet, but the T444E was the loudest (and best-sounding:) ) in the group.

Johnny, our city buys International trucks which are diesels and I've always thought that they were awful quiet compared to a lot of them. The 5.9 Cummins and the Detroits seem to me to be among the noisiest.

Recently, when I was stopped in a traffic delay in BC because of a mountie's crash, I walked ahead to the next vehicle to talk to the driver.

The engine was idling and it was a diesel, but it was quiet. The driver told me it was a Duramax. It was in a GMC pickup.

For what it's worth.

The Duramax sounds like a 454 with bad lifters. I actually LIKE the sound of a diesel--and the Ford Power Stroke (aka the International T444E) is justr as loud as the Cummins.

Yes...this is all true and dandy...but by far the most bitchin' sounding diesel in the ENTIRE PLANET has to be the absolutely neat 8V71 or 8V92 Detroit Diesel reving just about 2000 rpm!!!

Years ago, all of our old American LaFrance fire engines and ladder trucks had 671 and 8V71 Detroits with hardly any mufflers and they sounded soosss COOL! Broom, broom!!!

Anyway, I am sorry, got off the subject at hand, but I could not resist. DETROITS FOREVER!!! Wonder where all of those schoolies were going?

Don't know where they were going in R.I. but my friend has a shop near a truck salvage yard and they sold ten schoolies to some guys from Honduras. A mix of gas and diesel, dog nose and flat nose. They spent a day hooking them together two by two and when last seen were heading south on I-25 toward Mexico. 80 to 90 feet or more of bus. Seems they have a window of opportunity to get them into their country before some new laws come into force. I checked the tow bars they used and while sturdy looking had no provision for stopping the towed vehicle. So look out
