Hey All, Need some advice from some veterans going to Arcadia from the north. I'm looking at the map of Florida and it looks to me like the best route would be to go 95s to 4s to 17s I'm coming from Boston. Thanks in advance. |

That looks about right to me although I live in Lakeland which is about 1.25 hr from Arcadia, I can't help much coming from Boston! Ace |

Dear Doug - As I don't have my Atlas in front of me, here's a question: Do you exit off the 95S - to that 4S and 17S - PRIOR to hitting the New York Metro area, and that dreadful New Jersey Turnpike? I've found a really pleasant, low traffic route (through trial and error) but I'll wait for your answer - or consult my Atlas - before offering suggestions. The Best, Nellie Wilson |

Nellie, 95 goes south into Fl where you pick up I4 which goes sort of SW over to 17s which then goes due south to Arcadia. When you p/u 4, your WAY far from NY. Ace |

Doug, That is a good route. When coming from that direction, we take I-4 to US 27, south on US 27 to Lake Wales, west of SR 60 to Bartow, then south from Bartow on US 17 (A little less stop lights and "in town" traffic). Just north of Arcadia, you will see a 2 story log cabin convenience store on the right. Just past this store is a big green state sign that says Turner Center. Turn left at that sign. Jack |

Doug, to miss all the fun of 95 (and the tolls)head west into Pa on 78 and then south on 81 to 66 east then south on 17 which is also 4 lane. You come out onto the big road at Fredricksburg and miss the Baltimore DC 5 lanes of mayhem. It does add an hour or so to your trip but so less stressfull. Only way i go unless its snowing or i know i can pass thru in the early am hours. Hey Jack, do you recognize where our picture was taken? |

Thank you all, Yes Dave, if it were summer I would take the inland route as you suggested, but if there is a chance of snow then 95 along the coast is the safest route Does it make as good sense to stay on 4s to75s and grab 70e to Arcadia?Nellie,I don't really understand the question but comming from Canada we would be traveling about the same route once you passed through New England. |

Doug & Nellie, Starting with Nellie, drive down to Gananoque and take I81s all the way down to Harrisburg, then I83s to Baltimore/Washington... and you know what time of day NOT to get there. Take the outer loops to bypass both Baltimore (695) and Washington (495). Doug, I don't know how you're going to avoid NY, but does I84w to Scranton make sense? Then join up with Nellie on I81s, as above. From Washington, pick up I95s. At Jacksonville, hang a right on I8w to hwy 200/301s over to Gainsville. Then you'll pick up I75/91/429/I4 to miss Mickey Mouse, then Green Pond Road & 17 to Arcadia. That's how Maisie & I got down there in '05. We wanted the shortest route because we went down in a BMW Mini and wanted to arrive with round, not flat, bums! Ian www.busnut.com |

Doug, When I’m going home from your area I all ways take 90 to 84 to 91 or 684 or 87 depending on time of day. I find it much quicker than 95. I thought Nellie was in Vermont, if so 91 to 95. Doug when you get to Delaware you could always take rt1 and stop for that generator and proheat I told you about. (Message edited by ednj on December 08, 2008) |

Ok Guys; I live In Ocala Fl, which is 35 miles south of Gainsville. Now I avoid ALL major towns in the fl,Ga. area if at all possible. I drive to West Virginia at least 2 times a year sometimes more. I go to Charleston,SC every month at least. Having said that, I always come I-95 thru SC, GA and then,I enter Florida and take the exit 5 which is Fernindine Beach/Callahan, which is A1A. that brings you to Callahan and there you pick up 301 and that brings you to Ocala Fl. There you pick up I-75 and continue south until you arrive at the Arcadia exit. Driving time from Georia/Florida border to Ocala is 2-21/2 hrs. approx.120 miles. When driving 301 WATCH SPEED LIMITS In Starke,Lawety,Waldo. They will write a ticket for 2 miles over the posted 45 MPH. There is construction In Georgia about the 50 mile marker to Brunswick Ga and be careful. Any more Questions LOL Just funning Gomer This is the best route to take and by-passes Jacksonville and I-10 |

Once you come out of DC and are headed south on I-95, around the 156 mile marker you will see a sign for Potomac Mills Mall. Big outlet type mall. I personally don't see the draw ( one mall is like another) but they do a ton of business and there is a Wally World on the back side with plenty of parking. If you keep heading south you will go by a weigh station around the 154 mile marker. There is a Cracker Barrel on one of the exits near there. Either way any where along there look to the right and wave. I will sadly wave back and wish you well. Our trip to Arcadia was cancelled this year but Jack said we could come next year provided I do some work on the bus Frank |

If you would like to miss Baltimore and DC completely you can also sneak down the back way till you are south of Richmond. I know Nick likes to run this way. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Philadelphia&1s=PA&2c=Norfolk&2s=VA#a/maps/l:::Philadelphi a:PA::US:39.952202:-75.1642:city:Philadelphia+County:1/l:::Norfolk:VA::US:36.846699:-76.28 5599:city:Norfolk+City:1/l:::Emporia:VA::US:36.685799:-77.542801:city:Emporia+City:1/m:::: :0:::::/io:1:::::f:EN:M:/e If that link doesn't work just use mapquest and tell it you want to to from Philly to Norfolk then add in Emporia, Va to take you back over to I-95. Mapquest says it is about an hour longer and about 40 miles difference in driving. Just some options to think about Frank |

I wouldn't plan on taking I75 in Fla south of the Fla turnpike - the bridge at SR50 will be out for weeks - FWIW |

I did not know about the SR 50 bridge. What happened to it? If you are coming south on I-75, get off at Bushnell, North of SR 50, and go east to US301. Take US301 south. US 301 is not interstate, but it is a nice (4 lane most of the way) route. Jack |

Jack - Today another dump truck raised their bucket going down the road just in time to hit the overpass - Don't know how these guys can go down the road without noticing that the "sunroof" is open? |

Hi Ian - Thanks for the directions. The route you're suggesting is definitely the best. I discovered it mostly by accident... after getting sick and tired of the 95 and all the traffic and tolls. Have used it ever since. Snow or no snow, it's still better than the 95. Hey, Doug, it really is... honest. Nellie Wilson |
