Good People:

We have a MAN 1400 Series (SG-220-18-2) 60’ articulated transit coach that we converted into a mobile command post. It has served us well for several years. However, it has developed a problem, and we need some direction from the group.

Like most x-transit coaches, this one has an interlock that activates the brakes when the rear door is opened. We noticed several weeks ago that when we open the rear door via the handle at the driver’s area, the brakes would no longer come on.

We then discovered that when the when open the rear door, the air gauges (front, center, rear) all dropped rapidly only when we had the rear door open. Upon further investigation, it was discovered the air was pouring out of the coach relay valve exhaust port (but only when the rear door was opened). When the door was closed, the rest of the system(s) work normally, and no air drop.

Any suggestions on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a faulty release valve. air should only blow out of the valve when the door shuts, releasing air off the interlock circuit.-Donn

These relay/quick release valves only have a diaphragm and small valve in them. Most likely the diaphragm is blown. Remove the one thats leaking and take it apart. Easy to see the problem. Rebuilts are cheap.
