This will show on both boards. I am putting together a seminar for Jack's Bussin 2009 rally, on generators. It will focus on some of the discussions/questions on the BBs. Particularly, I will address noise reduction and efficient cooling. Now to my point. If anyone coming to the Bussin rally, is interested in offering their generator installation as an example of very quiet installation, let me know. This is NOT a contest. What I would like to do is give all of us an opportunity to learn additional techniques to minimize noise. Ed Roelle |

Ed, If no one else steps up, I'm happy to show off mine. Not the quietest in the world, but it's pretty good for being nearly 17kW. Achieved by boxing the whole unit it, drawing the intake air from under the center of the coach above the tranny by means of a serpentine duct, lining the box with sound-deadening material, remote-mounting the radiator with a squirrel-cage blower, and running a serpentine exhaust with a good muffler. Power is a 4-cylinder Kubota. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

An alternative sound insulation worth mentioning at your seminar is rockwool board. I used 1 1/2" 8 lb density Roxul in 2X4 sheets glued in place for installation then covered with hardware cloth (rabbit wire) and fastened with screws and washers through the hardware cloth every foot or so. Easy to do. Inexpensive and fireproof to greater than 1800 degrees. Call the rockwool manufaturers and speak to a rep to find source near you. Shipping was $100 for mine. Comes in other densities, 8 lb best for sound, and in 1", 1 1/2", 2" and 4" thickness. Since you will not need a full pallet, you will probably want what your closest source has in stock. It is really not expensive, was less than 50 cents a square foot. Used around large commercial engine installations for sound deadening, including military. Source: Specialty Products and Insulation Louisville KY 502-966-4588 I have extra if someone wants some near Nashville TN. Should be good over engine also. If I ever take the generator out again, I will wire hardware cloth / rockwool buttons over the screws to block last sound transmission source. |
