I have a 4905 also and I would go with diesel if I could afford it, but having a gasoline 4.5 Onan I am going to use it, and replace with diesel when I can. It will run both AC units, it did that just fine in my motorhome for several years. More power like yours would be better. I plan to use a 20-gallon tank from an older pickup, the kind that went behind the seat. I will mount it in a baggage bay with a grated hole beneath it for spills and vapors. Any small car type battery will work fine, even a large motorcycle battery made for a big inch electric start bike would do. I will use a car battery, they are cheap and I have the space. |

Hi Jake. I have a 4905 that was professionally converted in San Antonio in 1993. It has a diesel 10kw unit installed in the bay in front of the left side rear dual. It is on a slide out unit. The bay door is not vented. There is a 110 volt squirrel cage fan mounted to the floor at the rear of the genset that draws air into the bay through a screened vent in the floor in front of the genset. The fan blows the exhausted air out through a screened vent in the floor right below the fan unit. The fan is wired into the generator side of the genset so when it starts to produce electical currant the fan runs. The genset is enclosed in a plywood box and insulated on the inside. It works great with no problems at all. There is a small automotive radiator with a elect fan mounted on the opposite side of the bus just behind the dual wheel. The radiator fan is also wired through a relay activated by the 110 volts from the genset and in turn furnishes 12 volts to the rad. fan. Great setup. Hope you can derive some info from this. |

Jake,I removed the AC condenser and fan and installed my 6.5 in it's place. You will have to re-route some of the hot water piping too. If you do this there is room for a shelf above the genset to put the automotive battery above it. I also put my 110V compressor for the manual air-bag leveling system there. I ran tubing and hose foreward to the storage area under the drivers seat and installed a 6 gal. boat tank. This is enough for about 8 hours. Use a different bay if need be, just vent it well, and the gas storage area also. HTH Cheers...JJ |

I plan to install a 4.5 Onan RV genset ( 2 cyl gas eng) in the area that formerly housed the A/C condenser in my 1977 MC-8. That bus access door is expanded metal. I would like to make the setup as quiet as possible, So I thought of replacing the expanded metal on the door with solid sheathing. ( my mc8's siding has been replaced with smooth siding). I am wondering about cooling the generator. It's air cooled, of course, and (blows) vents through the floor. There are already two louvered vent holes in the floor from the factory a/c installation. So,I believe it could use one of these for the engine blower to discharge heat. Would then the other vent hole provide enough incoming air for it's needs? I had thought of using one of those household digital thermometers that measure "indoor and outdoor" temps, and locate one of those sensors in the "box" with the gen, so I could monitor the temp from inside the coach. Also, I assume the mufffler has to go umder the coach....do these have a tendency to fall victims to "speed breakers" in parking lots? Thanks for your thoughts. |
