Question. Does any one have an idea what a great, fair or other price would be for an air assit on my Eagle O-1? I am thinking of getting one soon.

Thanks,

Ron

Excuse the spelling. That is Air ASSIST.

I assume you mean air assist clutch? I have a friend who just put in an allison, and has one for sale. I drove the bus with it, that is really a nice option, makes the clutch act just like the one on you Geo Metro or something. I don't know if he has set a price yet or not.

The other style Air Assist is made by Air O Matic ,

for about $1300 you can get a power steering that doesn't ruin the high speed handeling, as installing a junkyard hydraulic can.

Ron, I don't know if a mousetrap will fit on an Eagle but we have one on our GM. We like it because it is simple and the clutch effort is low.

Luke at US Coach sold us ours for under $200, IIRC. It needed some work but was a lot cheaper and less involved than an air assist.

There is an Eagle specialist on the BNO home page, Southern Oregon Diesel that could probably fill you in.

Hi RC, don't feel stupid! I had never heard of one either before Fast Fred(I think) mentioned getting a spring assisted unit when I was looking for an air assisted one here on the board.

After it showed up, my brother, a Harley rider, looked at it and said that Harleys used them and they were called a mousetrap. I've used the term ever since. I really don't know if they have another name.

A mousetrap is an overcentering spring setup that is balanced so that it helps you push on the clutch when the effort is greatest.

While the clutch pedal is released, the springs are stretched quite a bit. In this position, they push the pedal up and there is no pressure from the springs in the pressure plate.

In the free pedal area, you compress the spring slightly, and as you start moving the clutch further to disengage it, the springs go over center.

The further down that you press the pedal, the better angle the springs have for helping you. This counteracts the pressure plate springs enough to make clutch operation easy.

I would guess that they cut the pedal effort by 2/3 or so. In the GM, it mounts right on top of the transmission. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it adjusted right to start with, but does not seem troublesome. It does add a few grease fittings, however.

Now, will someone tell us if they are used on other kinds of bus?
