Does anyone know the NAPA part number for the front and rear brake shoes on a 1960 4104?

Scott yopu might like to try your local heavy truck dealer or try MCI direct they will have them. i do not have their part # but i am sure that if you call them and tell them what make the bus is they will have the proper shoes to fit . the shoes you will get from NAPA will be shoes for a heavy truck and will either be softer or harder depending what they try to sell to you. MCI # 1-800527-7271 Munchie 1-800-428-8610 both of these companies are good to deal with. if still no luck let me know and i will look other # for you. mel 4104. buy the way how is your 4104 running?

Hey Scott,

Back in 2000, I had new linings put on both front and rear of our 4104-4095. I have the lining numbers, but I don't have a manufacture.

The steer axle lining is: PTB 4398 CD
The drive axle lining is: PTB 4541 CD

If you want me to, I can try to contact the parts guy (if he's still working there) and see if he can run the numbers.

Pretty sure you pull the shoes and have them religned to fit the drum (which may have been refaced etc...this is of course providing you haven't ground the shoe base down already.

GM coaches use an odd ball drum diameter; I'd be surprised if you can get relined shoes for it just anywhere. 14 1/2" diameter if I recall. You'll probably be able to get the lining, maybe from someone like Mowhawk. Be sure to get the plugs to cover the bolt holes, as any increase in lining surface is a benefit. BTW, the letters after the lining numbers refer to hardness or friction ratings. Make sure the letters are the same or higher. Also, if the drums have been cut oversize, the lining should be thicker also or the lining won't make fell contact for several thousand miles. Also oversize rollers.

Go to a big truch supplyer, look under coach brake blocks, they can be ordered in std..1x, 2x, 3x over size. be sure to wire wheel buff shoes an tighten but be carefull not to over tighten. I cut my drums max cause they were bad, not squared. An bought 3x over, they worked. Just measure width of block MC-8 are 14 1/2 also.

Well,,,
From the answers you've given I guess there is no reason to ask what the min/max thickness the shoe should be...

Mel,
The bus is running great. As you know I use it every week to go to the gigs. (I can really tell the difference when I don't drive it regularly) I'll give MCI a call and see what they say.
I'll see if Glenn's numbers match with anything I find from MCI or my local supplier...

My shoes are still intact and at the very least need some adjusting.
The adjusters look like they are nearly out of adjustment room so I was thinking I would just start fresh with new shoes.

I'm trying to get a few things ready for warmer weather and some downtime with the bus. I have the brakes to attend to, the mufflers to replace, air leaks to track down, and of course several little things to catch up on.
(and so goes the life of a bus owner...)

Austin -

You could always call Luke & his crew at US Coach (1-888-262-2434).

He'll not only know the correct part number, but will probably have some as reasonably-priced as other vendors.

FWIW & HTH. . .
