I set a new record today. The old one was a tie: My skoolie with the worn-out 370 was tied with a 1980 Grumman transit (6-71/Alison) & an old GMC 24' box truck (366 4bbl/7-speed Eaton). The new record is stupendously slow: 1995 International 4700 recycling truck with a DT466E & a 4-speed Alison slushbox. The throttle has 2 settings: idle, & WOT. Top speed is 55 on flat ground, & highwyay merging is dangerous, due to the S-L-O-W acceleration. It simply isn't enough engine to move 15 tons of truck. |

Old 70 something Ford Louisville welding tank delivery truck with steel diamond plate bed and dual tandem drive axles working off a Henderson walking beam. With a load of tanks, the five speed main and four speed aux. behind a 534 CID gasser gave it 3 speeds--slow, slower and slowest. And a consistent one MPG. 55 MPH? In your dreams! |

I had the "pleasure" of owning an early Crosley, NO not the one that had light weight welded block and overhead cam. I had the 1941, convertable that had a small 2 cyl air cooled "boxer" that would jam the tranny. Real slow coming home on reverse! FAST FRED |

I have driven a '48 TDH-3610 from Fargo, ND to Myrtle Beach, SC, on to NC, and thence to Johnson City, TN. Top speed: 51mph, down hill, 14mph uphill, ANY hill or driveway, or overpass. 47mph on the flats. 0- 60 in: never. fuel mileage was about 13.5 though, pulling a 8K trailer. Dallas |

My 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel 4-speed with factory airconditioning trying to get from Bakersfield CA to Cave Junction OR using Interstate Five in August during daylight hours several years ago. The factory engineers who came up with this one should be drawn and quartered, shot, hung, then executed with all their families! Then really punished!! They should have only had 5-speeds with the diesel and probably not factory airconditioning at all. At 55 mph it takes about 20 hp to push the car down the road. The airconditoning has to take 5 to 10 hp. The only problem is that in high gear (no choice) the mill only puts out about 25 hp at highway speed. There is just no extra hp available to either run the AC or to accelerate the Rabbit. Thanks. |

My toad. A '70 VW bus. 65 flat out on level ground, with tail wind, and real fun up hill. Screaming off the line and highway entry performance. Holds a bunch of stuff though, but then it's even slower. Tows like it isn't there. Gets us the "hippie bus" looks in the out of the way places. We like her though. Bradd |

I also had the honor of owning a VW bus; mine was a '72 with the (I think) 1700 mill with the twin carbs. Type two? Ran fine, but hard on gas and very short geared indeed. Only got around 17-18 mph and at 60 mph it spun around 3500 rpm? Can't rightly remember. A very long time ago. Yea, VW buses are soosss cool. Thanks. |

Here in Edmonton, we are still running some GMC 5307's with 6V-71's and 2 speed autos in them, which isn't the most powerful combo in the first place. Every once in a while I get one that is due for an overhaul and when I go up one of our hills in the river valley, I feel like asking the customers if anyone would want to get out and push. There is one hill in particular that the buses can get down to 20-30 kmh (15-20 mph) usually but the weak engines end up crawling less than 5 mph. It feels pretty embarrasing when someone with a bicycle goes by you. LOL! Henry |

Early 1970's GMC skoolie with the V-6 gas engine and a 4 speed trans. It couldn't get out of it's own way even if it was burning up! |

'49 Crosley would get hot and refuse to run. (it didn't actualy run, it sort of crawled) One day it stalled 1/2 way between Loveland Colorado and Fort Collins so we turned it around and opened the doors into the wind and sailed back to Loveland. |
