Hi kids..Pete here

After blowing up my 4 speed tranny...and ripping out the shifter cables in my 4501, I bit the bullet and got an Allison 5 speed auto put into it. Berni, at Bernhard bus did an incredible job...didnt even trash the carpet :)
Bill, Steve and Kevin kicked some serious butt and blew it out in a week. I cant belive the difference and it was the best thing ive ever done to the bus. It was a big expence..but the only way the rig was going to survive and continue to live.
Bernie has worked on my bus several times...If your on the upper east coast in the mid atlantic states and have a prob..Bernie is the man. He had older and newer parts and came up with a few choise parts that I couldnt find..

the automatics can be a pain too, and you loose mpg and mph both, but in anycase you are the one that pays the bills , i wish you the very best.

I will agree with you Pete. I had my 6 speed stick replaced with an Allison 748 in my Prevost and could not be happier. I guess is up to each person where we want to spend our money, but if I ever want my wife to drive the bus this was the only option.

You WANT your wife to drive the bus?!?!?!?! That's half the reason I'm keeping manual steering!

So, Pete, do I interpret your post to mean that you now have an 8V71 engine with the HT754 Allison?

If so, that really is a sweet powertrain combination. . . a little sluggish out here on the left coast crossing the Sierras, maybe, but something that is virtually unbreakable.

Just be sure to downshift it manually climbing hills for the best performance (read my article on shifting located in the "Articles" section of BNO for some tips).

And Johnny - if at oh dark thirty you trip and break your right ankle stepping in a ground squirrel's hole, who's gonna get your coach back down the mountain?

Johnny,

We may like to do all the driving,
but if she gets bored just riding around,
there'll be no pleasure in the bus for anyone...

I'm with RJ.

Every macho man ends up needing an ambulance driver sometime!

And you'll have one more thing that the two of you can either share,
or have engaging discussions about...

happy coaching!

Pete no need to get emotional over this thing , i thought we all had a right to an opinion????i just tell it the way i see it ive never had any problem with my automatic a side from the mpg and speed thing which is a price one has to pay for not shifting gears. sorry

Ok Frank...sorry..but after 8 or 9 breakdowns on vacations...no parts available, thousands of dollers in towing and repairs...the auto is my only option..I could really care less about the mpg vs just getting there..lol

RJ, Bernie told me to do the manual shifting going up hill...worked already..just takes some getting used too.

FYI...i fired my ex wife 12 years ago...but incase i meet someone on the road..lmao I put a kill switch in the bus :) aint going anywhere witout me.

To those who have old rigs and cant find alternitives or parts...do the conversion..at least youll get there

F.Y.I. My wife has a CDL license and has driven buses for over 10 years. So if you ever see a purple Prevost going down the road and my wife is driving, just honk and know that I am in good hands.
