My temp gauge went haywire; reads hot as soon as I turn engine over. I had previously replaced the gauge not knowing the sending unit is intimately related. Now, I want to replace the sending unit in an attempt to have the ability to use gauge. Haven't driven for two months,(I KNOW - one hundred miles each month). How should I proceed? I am concerned that the gauge and current sending unit aren't compatable. We had just bought the bus and were thirty minutes from home, when the gauge went screwy; pulled over, let it cool, and went to NAPA to purchase gauge. |

You need to purchase the sender that is made to work with the gauge you have otherwise it will not produce accurate readings. |

Fast question I need to install a heat guage on the 8V71 DD. What is the difference between the electric type and one called "capillary"? Is either one best to add to the bus? Thanks for any help-q |

The elec type uses a variable resistor sending unit and is wired to a meter (gage) in your inst panel in the front of the bus. The capillary type is a closed system consisting of a bulb (sending unit), tubing and a gage. When you buy one of these, the parts are a sealed unit, containing a fluid, and cannot be disassembled. The enclosed fluid expands when heated to move a needle in the gage. I have one of each type; elec for my dash and a capillary type in the engine compartment. The capillary type is probly the most accurate but is not suitable for your dash as the tubing is not long enough. I find the elec dash unit is about 15 degrees hotter than the gage in the eng compartment. I have checked the accuracy using a hand-held temp gun. Hope this helps. Joe 4106-2119 |
