(Before you proceed, I want you to know that Ian personally authorized this post. I have too much respect for him – and for all of you – to risk violating the rules.)

Hi Guys,

S.O.S., woman in distress…

I’d looked forward all last week to Thursday – forecast to be warm (relatively) and dry (relatively). But as you know, that forecast never happened. So I used that brisk and snowy day to finish packing the bus… except for guitars and such. Friday became my personal D-Day. I packed my music stuff, and all the ‘last minute’ perishable bus stuff (paints and solvents). This ended up taking much longer than expected and when I finally cranked the old DD it was already 4:00 PM. It started fine and aired up nicely.

The bus was raring to go, but Nellie (that being moi) was exhausted and starving. I figured the weather – light snow, still warm – would hold while I had a meal and a nap. So around 9:00 PM I started her up, started to back out and bzrrrrr! Tires spinning in their own little ditches. I’d forgotten about the ^%** snowplows. Not much snow, but enough to get me stuck. We shoveled until 2:30 AM (Saturday) but no dice.

I decided on some more sleep and a re-try at dawn… forecast was still good and it was still + 25 degrees.

(It was around this time when I got BW’s email, offering his and Ian’s assistance. I thank you both!).

When I awoke, it was down to 5 F and dropping! And by the time I got unstuck, it was nearly noon and even colder. But the bus was doing fine and everything worked well. Figuring that every mile South would counter-balance the sinking temperature, I hit the road.

Well, I was just so happy! I gained 15 degrees in about 2 hours, the roads turned from snow to wet and, finally, to dry. And just as I thought ‘well, I'm out of trouble now’ I hear the low air buzzer. By some miracle (truly!) there was a rest area right ahead. I pulled in and just as I parked, the emergency brakes clamped on.

From elation to despair in the blink of an eye! I knew right away I was in deep trouble.

It took all afternoon but I finally got some assistance. This fellow, Dale, tinkered around with this and that but nothing changed … she still wouldn’t make air. Finally he just aired the bus from his compressor (probably should have done that in the first place) and we headed towards his garage. On the way, the bus started making air again.

At this point, he suggested I was good to go. But I said no, that I’d rather get to his shop where I could plug in (if needed) and monitor the compressor awhile (the only decent decision I’ve made so far). And sure enough, a block before the shop she stopped working again. And after I got her parked, she started making air again.

By then it was 9:00 PM and I decided to stay over night with the bus on fast idle. It kept making air, purging normally, and I was thinking maybe it would be okay. Maybe I could leave when the sun warmed things up a bit? And then, at about 1:00AM, she dropped her air pressure. Luckily, I’d read that ‘stick on the throttle’ trick posted on The Board. After I got the revs right, I covered the radiator shutters (open of course, with no air). I stayed warm but ended up burning 1/3 of my precious fuel – which I’d built up a few gallons at a time for months… only to watch it disappear with all this idling since cold weather (and weather related problems) began.

On Sunday nobody shows up. Ralph Peters had told me it’s probably the governor. But with nobody at this wilderness shop and no parts stores open, I followed Ralph’s advice and opened the compressor intake line, and the lines into the governor, and gave them a shot of PB Blaster. Then I shut her down… properly, this time, using the fuel cutoff switch (per tips from The Board).

The owner of the shop showed up around 3:00 PM. I started the bus and she started airing up again. But, I must say, very slowly. We pulled her inside the garage and I got the cheapest motel I could find.

I've been working so hard to get myself out of the frozen tundra, and I end up like this, a scant two hours from warm (well, tolerable) weather. I'm really quite desperate and rapidly running out of money. I never ever expected to get into such a bad spot. Work waiting for me right down the road and here I sit.

I've put everything into this… all I own of any value is in that bus and – somehow – I must go forward and keep my head together. But I’m freaking out.

To be completely honest, I'm down to $500.00 in my pockets. I must say this is very humiliating to me. I'm more a musician than a business woman, but I always managed to keep my head above water. And suddenly I’m drowning.

Good news: The garage confirms what Ralph predicted – the governor needed to be changed. That’s done and everything else is fine. They drained all the tanks (found no yucky stuff), blew out the air lines and checked and cleaned the air dryer. They don’t carry the replacement canister for my model but said it seemed to be doing its job… a little oil in the bottom but I guess that’s normal?

Bad news: I just went down there and the bill is $995.87… for changing the governor and doing some routine maintenance (nothing, by the way, that I hadn’t already done). Hopefully I can get some of it billed to my CAA card (at least the road side service part). I’ll talk to the owner of the shop tomorrow.

I’d hoped to get on the road today, but now it’s impossible. Even if I could pay this outrageous bill, there are winter storm warnings everywhere. They agreed to keep the bus inside tonight (this bitter cold would destroy everything I own) but who knows about tomorrow? If I don’t pay them, I can’t take the bus and everything I own will be lost.

So that’s my plight, I’m stuck here with not enough money to pay that bill. The last thing all my BusNut friends wanted to hear, I’m sure. But I’m reaching out… and I don’t know where else to turn. Friends are pretty hard to find when you’re in trouble.

Anyway, I was just hoping one of you – or a few together – could float me some funds… or authorize a portion of the bill on your credit cards? Or something like that. If 10 guys would trust me for a $100 bucks (or 20 guys would trust me for $50) it would save my life. I can definitely pay it back within 30 days, and even include a personally autographed album (that, plus four bits, might get you a cuppa coffee).

If anyone out there can call or email me to help me out of this mess, I would be forever grateful.

I’m at 802-295-7577 Room 27. I also have a ‘Tracfone’ that I use mostly to receive messages (too expensive to actually talk on). That number is 802-323-9583. And my email is music4u2@hotmail.com.

Through all of this I must say I have faith I’ll get past this hard stretch. I just need some help to pay for these repairs and get to Virginia, where I have work waiting for me. And then to Florida and (later) Nashville, where work awaits me too.

This is truly the last thing I expected I’d have to do. I thought I’d be in Florida two months ago, playing music and making money…

I pray I’ll hear from some generous soul… or souls.

Your desperate but still hopeful BusNut friend,

Nellie

Sorry, I'm not in a position to help but I think I would just give the guy $100.00 for replacing the $20.00 governor and hit the road.
I would also publish the name of that garage all over the internet.

Did you sign an estimate and work authorization? I understand taking a little advantage when someone is stuck but a thousand for the governor is pure robbery.

I think I might also contact the States Attorney in Vermont. Maybe start here: http://www.atg.state.vt.us/display.php?smod=8

Good luck,
Len

You know, Len, that's not a bad idea. Not a bad idea at all. Trouble is, right now I'm a hostage. At least my bus is.. and my bus has become pretty much an extension of myself.

Let's just say I'm not exactly dealing from position of power.

But thanks for the thought... I may very well follow up on that.

Nellie, I'll throw in $50 if you can figure out how I can get it to you. I don't want this guy at the shop having my credit card number after what he is pulling with you though. My little $50 won't do much good though unless some of our other family members can help out too. As a singer myself and an ex-Nashville boy, I know about the lean times. If you can take PayPal or something, let me know. My e-mail is in my profile/

I'll throw in a hundred for a fellow CDN. Email me as to how to get it to you as like Dale I don't want numbers floating around. Direct deposit to YOUR bank account is probably the safest.

Gee Nellie, Sorry to hear about your plight. I'm sorry but we can't help right now, wife lost her job last October and we are just barely making it as it is.

I know there will be some help coming your way, I just wanted to know we are thinking of you.

And that shop charging that much......Sheesh....That's down right highway robbery. How many hours does he have listed? What are the shop rates? What parts did he use? He should have installed a new air compressor at that price.

Good Luck, You're in good hands here.

Nellie, I volunteer to call the shop and give those guys a friendly tune-up for you. What is their posted hourly rate for the shop and field and how many hours did they actually spend on such a simple problem? I don't mind helping you with a loan but I believe the bill needs to be adjusted. I will call them as your friend and I promise not to make matters worse. Send me the numbers and the rate and hour details and I will call them tomorrow morning. I sure hate to see someone be taken to the cleaners.

Nellie, That will work just fine for me or you can send it via email if you had rather.

Even so, guys, we should keep working towards raising some cash for Nellie for those who are so inclined and have it to loan to help cover the fair final number so Nellie can be on her way soonest. I am in for $50.

I sent you a couple of emails with some additional questions. The goal will to be to get your bill adjusted to reflect a fair amount and certainly get your bus out of his shop. The bus is actually considered your home and he cannot hold your home hostage but that should be beside the point. We will handle with firm care.

Nellie,
In the future when broke down on the road, come to your friends here (and over there) first. You had already diagnosed the problem, somebody could have shipped you a governor and walked you through replacing it or sent you to a reliable shop.

I'm looking at your bill.
Looks like $93.00 in mileage. 30 miles @ $3.10/mi, steep but not outrageous.

Road service labor 4 hrs @ $85.00. 1 hour travel and 3 hours working on the bus???? To diagnose what you already knew???

Shop labor 6 hours @ $85.00. 6 hours to replace a governor, seems closer to 30 minutes to me.

Len

Hi Nellie (and all),

I'm set up with PayPal in both Canadian and US dollars. Let me get a "Donate" button up on this thread, then I'll call you with my PayPal MasterCard card number to pay for your repairs.

Anyone wishing to donate anything may do so via the "Donate" button and I'll give Nellie a full accounting of who paid what, then she can take care of things from there. Fair enough?

And folks, thank you for your generosity. What a great gang you are. I am proud to be part of this team.

Ian

Oh, Ian, thanks so very much! It was driving me crazy… all these wonderful and generous people trying to help me and having problems doing so. Last thing I wanted was to inconvenience anyone.

[Like this fellow, Bill. He couldn’t get a wire from TD Bank to my Quebec account because of some special ‘code’ or something. He went out of his way to figure a solution... finally ended up doing a Western Union transfer. Thank you, Bill... I am so apprecitive. And it was nice to have the chance to talk with you]

This just makes things so much easier on everyone. I’ll give you a full accounting of any money that comes to me directly… and I’ll want to personally respond to folks who send money through your personal accounts.

This IS a great crowd, isn’t it? You must be very proud to have started all this. I owe you a huge hug and a kiss when I see you in the spring. In fact, I owe EVERYONE hugs and kisses.

Love all around,

Nellie Wilson

Nellie,

I'm so sorry to hear about your plight. I agree with many of the others, their labor is completely outrageous.

I would love to be able to send you some money, but right now, I just can't do it. I was recently involved with a 'bad business associate' as well as separated from my spouse, both of whom have completely taken me to the cleaners.

I wish you all the best of luck and if there is anything I can do to help as you make your way closer to Pennsylvania, please let me know. All of my contact info is in my profile.

Best Wishes,

Josh

Thanks Josh,

I just got to throw your number in my tracfone contact list. I'll check on mapquest to see where you're located.

When I leave from here, I plan on taking the 91S; to 84W; to 87S/287S; to 78W and stop in Carlisle over night. If anyone have any contacts going through this way, I would be more than happy to hear about it before I hit the road... I sure don't want to get in another mess when I leave...know what I mean???

Thanks to everyone again,

Hey Nellie, well I guess the advice to head south has led you into some adventures. FWIW I never thought you would hit the road with only $500, that's a little low even for me (and I always travel with enough tools for fairly major work on the road). I'm in the middle of all my post xmas bills, have new jobs starting in a few weeks and a GF who expects something special for Valentine's day so I'm out as far as cash is concerned.
The only thing I can give you is advice, and while the guys here are being really generous and that's great and I'm proud of their graciousness "what the !" were you thinking? No one else is saying it and I'll probably get in sh.. for saying it but $500.? If everything went right that would barely cover incidentals and that would include using all the resources here before paying a mechanic to work on your rig.
I know this may seem harsh when your down but someone had to say it.
Best of luck, my best thoughts are with you in these difficult (albeit self imposed) times.

Nellie,

I'm not to far from Carlisle. Seven Valleys is in southern York County. I'm about half-way between Harrisburg, PA and Baltimore, MD.

I hope all is well and that you were able to get your baby released from captivity. Just make sure you talk nicely to her!!! I've found that that actually helps sometimes, or at least helps to keep you calm!!

Keep us posted and good luck!!

Thanks Ian for helping get a way to get the money to Nellie. I have been stressing at work all day trying to figure out how to get it to her. Paypal is so easy. Nellie as others have said no need to repay. That would just take away my blessing I get for being allowed to help. Thanks

Thanks Ian. I just sent my $50. You certainly did figure out a way to streamline this for everyone!

Good luck to you, Nellie.

Well Patrick, you're right. And today I wouldn't dream of hitting the road without every contingency accounted for. But, in my 20's, a different story entirely. I left several times on a road trips with a buddy and no where near enough money. We would just pick up hitch hikers for gas money. If we blew an engine, that was just where we were going to live for a while.

I sure understand your point, and under normal circumstances I’d probably think the same way. But perspective dictates viewpoint, don’t you agree? I once had a boss (half-Cherokee) who had a pet saying: “Never judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his moccasins.”

Now, Patrick, I suspect you use your bus for pleasure. Correct? And I see you live in Montreal, a thriving metropolis with plenty of employment opportunities, etc. And maybe some decent mechanics, as well? So you can probably bide your time and pick your moment to go blissfully bussing.

I don’t enjoy those luxuries. My bus is an indispensable tool of my trade, a trade that requires much travel and exposure to the public. My (ex) town had always been marginal, both in entertainment and (normal) employment opportunities. And in October, the entire downtown (such as it is) was purchased by an investment consortium that literally closed it down. So the few places I could entertain, or wait tables or just do odd jobs, vanished.

At about the same time, the bus I thought was ready to roll decided to sh** itself. So the money I had saved to travel went into the bus.

Still, not too much worry… I had several outside contracts to work on. But to get paid, I had to complete them. So I decided to finish my work while I fixed the bus. And that took me into December. And then the economy took a dump and… guess what? Yes, I got stiffed for a lot of money. And, sure, I might recoup, but it won’t be by tomorrow.

So, you see, Patrick, my untimely departure was bred not of choice but by necessity…. Either to stay where I was and slowly go broke or take my best shot to get to where I had work waiting.

As for my meager funds, that’s what I have left… not what I left WITH. There’s a difference… much of what I left WITH has been expended on this room from which I write and on replacing fuel I never planned on burning. And I expected to replenish my coffers just a few hours down this mean old highway. As I said before, this is work, not pleasure (certainly not very pleasuring right now, anyway). I didn’t expect the money to last all winter, just for a few hundred miles.

As for tools, I carry a full complement of those too. And had I located a governor, I would have installed it myself.

As for your comment, “someone had to say it.” Not really, Patrick. Not really.

No more than I chide you for not planning a little farther ahead for your GF and Valentines Day. I don’t know your situation, just as you don’t (didn’t) know mine.

I’m just thankful there are so many on this Board willing to overlook my seemingly idiotic decision and help me out. Advice is always welcome, but there’s a time and place.

Still love ya, though.

I want to thank everyone again for your compassionate help and understanding, I'll get back to all of you individually and send you CDs once I'm in a more convenient position. I sure for now need some rest before I get back on the road.

The snow is supposed to stop around midnight, so the roads should be OK by the morning.

You have made me a much happier busnut. When I'm 'rich and famous' I'll remember you :-)

Nellie, It's funny how people can see the same situation differently. I for one applaud your effort at this time of year on leaving an area with no work and trying to get to an area where you can find work. Guess maybe there are just a few of us left that would rather NOT go on welfare and instead risk an adventure in order to take care of ourselves. Just sorry your trip was not a little smoother, but think of the stories you will be able to share with the rest of us!...Best of Luck,Rod

I second your thoughts Rod!!

Nellie, I also agree with you in that there is a time and place for everything, and this was not the time for sarcastic remarks to be made. I've been in similar situations and it's not fun. However this time next year, hopefully you will be able to look back and laugh at this misfortune.

Best of Luck on your Journey to Virginia!!!

Nellie,
I applaud your spirit of adventure. Many years ago, my wife and I sold our house in Illinois which afer the pay-off only left us a couple thousand dollars), rented a U-Haul and headed to Florida. No house waiting, no job, just us and our 2 small boys. 33 years later, best move we ever made. Sorry I can't help with finances, but if you are ever in SW Florida, you have a place to stay (we have 11 RV hook-ups at our place). Jack

What a nice way to wake up from a little cat nap!!! Seeing all of your encouragements, and support. I am sooo happy!!! I can almost see the sun shine through that terrible storm.

By the way, I want to thank Mr. Anonymous that called me yesterday night. I meant to mention it before but things have been a little chaotic, as you know... I don't know who you are but I sure appreciate your kindness. Someday, maybe you'll identify yourself and I can at least send you a CD.

Your kinda nutty busnut buddy,

Nellie

p.s. I'll probably end up writing a song, or two, or three, about the craziness of all this...

p.p.s. To Wayne: I guess you must be twice as nutty as the rest of us... (hugs)

I Absolutely Applaud your spirit. I grew up believing if you do right by folks when it is your turn to need help someone will help you.
I have a wealth of stories to back that up.
I still believe it.
Jack and Paula Conrad proved it to me once again back in 07 when I went to S Fla to pick up a 54 model 4104 - Hugely Thanks to their incrediblty kind help and hospitality we made it home to Memphis with her and I still work on her a little every week - another grand adventure I wouldn't trade it on anything nor the terrific folks I have met in the process. Always makes me feel good just to think about them.
So you keep right on Nellie - Good Luck and Godspeed - Bud

Nellie,

You have done a great job explaining your plight, and I'm sorry that not all received it well. We have all been in smimilar situations and it's not nice to kick a girl when she's down.
Now get up, dust yourself off and head for the SUN!

You deserve some after what you've been through. And if you ever get the chance to come to Abilene, you are more than welcome to hang your hat here!

Good Luck!

When I get into calmer waters, I'll build myself a busnut folder with all of your addresses and contact info so I don't miss anyone down the road. And I sure hope to get into a 'jam session' with musicians-busnuts, and/or share a drink or a meal or simply some good time face to face with all of you.

Hugs and kisses,

Thanks Ian for the paypal link! You are such a first class gentleman.

If we waited to be prepared for every contingency we would never take any risks, never take a chance, never start any businesses, never reach for our dreams, never approach love, never convert a bus, never drive a car, always be conservative to the point of stifling our creativity and life would be such a horrible bore.

It is always easy to "Monday morning quarterback" and we all are guilty of doing so at one time or another. These observations are obvious to most human beings and yet we all still press forward and take chances and no doubt we all know things can happen and sometimes they do and then, our perfect plans are disrupted. These things make us stronger in character and wisdom but hopefully don't reduce our strong drive to move forward even at the thought that things might not be perfect once again.

It happens that we all belong to this very small group of busnuts and wannabe busnuts where we all understand because most of us have been there and done that and we can certainly feel Nellie's pain. We are like a family and most of us are certainly not about to leave our sister stranded. Godspeed Li'l sister!

Hi folks,

Just a quick update:

Just got off the phone with Nellie and she's well rested and just about ready to face the new day tomorrow.

Thank you for your donations. They are truly appreciated. Nellie was totally speechless when I told her how much had been donated so far.

So, a couple of administrative things: There have been two donations by eCheck, which are gratefully acknowledged but Nellie & I have agreed to refund them because the transactions wouldn't be clear of PayPal until as late as February 5th - a little late for the current dilemma. Those refunds have occurred, so you both will see that in your emails. Your thoughtfulness receives our mutual heartfelt thanks. Thank you.

I have also received a donation of $1. Again, I refunded that. Not that every dollar doesn't count, but I am absorbing the PayPal fees for these donations - it's what little I can do - and by the time I pay the 33 cents and Nellie has to repay the 67 cents, it's just too administratively task oriented so I refunded it now, with sincere thanks for the kind thought. It is not meant to appear ungrateful. Again, thank you.

I'll try to keep you updated on Nellie's progress if she is not able to, herself.

Thanks everybody. Your assistance is a significant help.

Ian

I just have to say this: two of you guys sent me the most poetic pieces that I can imagine regarding my adventurous journey.

You Greg, with that beautiful rethoric, made me cry. And you , Ace, with that beautiful (and funny) poem. Damn, you guys are poets and don't know its!!!

I guess I'll end up picking here and there through all of these posts and build a whole new CD: 'A Dream in Progress'...

Here's the poem Ace sent me,
a future song, believe me:

"The Repair Bill"

I left my home, to find me some work,
Singing country songs, maybe even a tear jerk!

It was a cold winter morn, when I boarded my bus,
With freezing weather around me, she put up a fuss!

Two hours from home, heading South for the Sun,
The ole girl decided, she wasn't going to run!

With an escort in front, to the shop we did go,
To get it fixed up, so we can leave this snow!

One problem still stands, in the way of our leave,
A bill too high, Yes, I'm a little peeved!

Only so much cash, in my pocket, and on hand,
Could this be the end, to my little country band?

I'm a woman by golly, a little naive!
With friends like you, I'm ready to leave!

Thank you all, for the money you loaned,
Still heading South, not going home!

With guys like you, a girl in distress,
Once and for all, you all are the best!

Don't think for a moment, I don't appreciate it,
I will mention you all, in my first big hit!

I WAS JUST FOOLING AROUND AND STARTED TO WRITE. HERE IS THE RESULT OF ASILLY POEM. IT'S FOR YOU, DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT! DON'T MENTION MY NAMETHOUGH! LOL

Ace

Ain't that cool!!!

*blush* Yeah, I keep telling her that, Nellie!! LOL!!!

Donations are still being accepted, folks, so thank you for your inquiries both online and via email to myself and Nellie. We should be good by tonight. Nellie's going to attempt to get her bus out of hock this morning and is in possession of my PayPal MasterCard (in case you were unaware, a PayPal MasterCard can only be used up to the amount of one's PayPal balance - so, really, it's a prepaid gift card good anywhere MasterCard is accepted).

Ace, I'm not surprised you wrote a song about this small misfortune of Nellie's. You certainly showed your most vulnerable, sensitive side last year when you lost your beloved father and shared your experiences with me when I lost mine in the fall... very comforting to have a friend like you. Nice words, though some humourous, your poem is a great gesture. Perhaps we can get some of the musical lads together to work your words into some music - I see me on git, Nellie with some flute riffs, etc, etc... I see us all some day standing on stage with a then famous Nellie singing her broke down song. Yee-haww!!

Thank you again everyone.

Hi Tony & Kim -

Thank you so much for asking. Still a little short but I'm trying to muster up the courage to go see that garage guy and try to get this bill adjusted. I truly doubt it will happen, but will give it my best. And Greg (Eagle 20) offered to intercede on my behalf... don't know his plan but he sounds like a smart fellow. In the meantime, I much appreciate your concern and anything you might be able to do.

To R.C. Been meaning to get back to you... your prayers are as welcome as any donation, believe me. I need all the prayers I can get. And who knows... I wouldn't be surprised if it's your prayers that CAUSED some donations.

Thank you all, again (No matter how often I say it, it will never be enough).

Nellie

Nellie -

I kicked in a little bit, too, thanks to Ian's link.

I understand being broken down - imagine being in that situation with 45 passengers! BTDT!

Here's hoping the shop has some compassion. . . if not, let them know (once you've got your bus!) that you'll publicize all over the internet their company name as a rip-off outfit to avoid - not only to the bus crowd, but also the RV & trucking industry, too!

Oh, and as you get down towards NJ while headed south, might stop in and introduce yourself to Luke & his crew at US Coach, the east coast busnut's friend.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Len, yours is a great idea! Wish I'd have thought of that to tell her this morning when she called!!

RJL, In chatting with Nellie this morning, I also mentioned Luke, paralleling your thought to see him, if for nothing more than to get the all clear on her 5C. She had called him and got his location but said he was only going to be in for a short window of time. Because Luke was a few hours off her route, she decided she was going to carry on to a bus nut in PA and hole up there until the next snow storm passed. She should be free and clear of snow - and, hopefully, cold related problems - by Saturday. Fingers crossed!

I haven't heard from her since 10:30 this morning, my PayPal account indicates she's paid for the repair, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say she's likely on her way.

Skip, Thanks for the link to Sabil and Sons. Maybe we should all take a moment to send them a quick line expressing our displeasure in their treatment of Nellie, and that we will avoid their service station if ever in that area. I know I'm going to.

Though we may feel rightous in our deeds
Please remember that for some reason there may
be another side of the story........

In other words we don't have all the facts if
someone has the energy to open a dialog with
them then the link can be the door.
And a possible lesson learned for the rest of us

I am glad that her bus is out of hock and down the road........That is where it should be.

... and with that latest donation from Don Fairchild via Dale Houston, ladies and gentlemen, I will now close the donation box and offer you my most sincere thanks for an excellent show of support for our fellow conversion enthusiast.

Your donations have fulfilled the need with a little left over. I have suggested to Nellie that she use the balance to top up her fuel tank so I, for one, am more comfortable knowing she can at least make it to warmer climes with the resources at hand (I hope I wasn't out of line for suggesting that to her - I certainly don't want to offend any of the sensibilities of those who were kind enough to make a donation).

I'm sure we'll hear from Nellie later tonight with an update of her continuous adventure and I'm also certain she'll want to author her own words of thanks to you all for your donations, prayers and well wishes.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Folks,

Just a quick note to say I'm just off the phone with Nellie and she cleared VT and is down in CT right now, trying to lite somewhere. She has her hands full because current temp anywhere near her is about 29 or so... lots of perishable stuff happening in her home on wheels.

Anyhoo, she wanted me to tell all y'all that she may not get online tonite but will absolutely report in ASAP.

Keep going , Nellie, find a warm spot for both you and the bus. One more day and you're laughing!!

Ian, I know I have been critical of you in the past, but in this situation with Nellie you have shown a great deal of class. I may have misjudged you, and for that I am sorry. You and everybody who helped Nellie out truely showed what being a busnut is all about. "ADDABOYS FOR EVERYONE"

This is great news! Bus Nuts are the BEST!

I know Nellie will respond when she warms up. Can't wait to hear a good report.

Ian, You have showed me what a class act you are! We have not met, but I know we'll meet somewhere down the bus highway.

Good Luck Nellie, we're still praying for you!

I have no words to express my deep feelings... I'm stunned... I love you all, what can I say?

I'm in CT right now, close to Danbury, I finally got out of VT, WOW!!! Feels like spring here...

I would love to take the time to give you a full report of what's been going on, but I better get down the road if I want to get to Carlisle before dark. Yet I can't help it, I have to take the time to give you at least the basic updates of my trip.

There was no way to knock that stupid bill down... I talked to the 'boss' and he told me that 'his employee had to cut the bolts... it was a tedious job, in such a small hole to work in, da, da, da...'

He told me I can call AAA and have some of the road work paid by them...

Well, well... I paid the bill, put $100.00 in the fuel tank and got on the road, said 'adios amigo' to the VT border, crossed Hartford, CT in rush hour...(gulp), and had to stop over night.... no more concentration available.

The bus behaved nicely and ran smooth (thank God, and all of his angel busnuts). I feel like I just came out of prison... pretty strange feeling... I mean, I'm just an 'innocent black sheep'...nothing very dangerous... well, I guess wolves don't mind if you're a white or a black sheep, do they?

I'll post a better report when I get to Ralph's place, but in the meantime I wanted you to know that I know I wouldn't be making this journey without you.

God bless you all, I love you,

Nellie

Guys, I spoke with Nellie on the phone just before she went to the shop and she asked me to standby to make the call but she was reluctant to bring in some outside help (especially since I was not right there in their face) since they had her bus and all of her belongings in their possession (can't blame her for that!). She was going to call me to get on the phone with them if needed but I expect she was either able to get some satisfaction or otherwise felt too much was at risk if she called in some outside help. When she checks in we will know that result and I imagine Ian can see the total from his card as well. I believe it would still be worth the effort to approach them after the fact if they did not ultimately treat her fairly but it is Nellie's call to make that decision of course.

Well you posted while I was writing! Glad it is going your way now Nellie. I know just how you feel and it that is a bittersweet feeling, isn't it?

Unless I am completely missing something, it sounds like it is time to threaten/start a campaign against that shop, write the better business bureau a letter, write the local chamber, file a police report and file a complaint with the state.

It looks cold and snowy in the next few days. Probably much better than what she left, but not the banana belt

I realy hope that business looks at this thread and realizes how many connections there are in the trucking industry, and/or keep close contact with those who travel the North-East commercially.

Maybe they should check other threads to see that some of us would prefer a several hundred mile tow and resulting cost to a GOOD garage and mechanic(and the resulting expense); rather than deal with the kind of treatment reported here.

I've done just that kind of thing with my car, and I saw "Bob"? do that with his blown engine getting it hauled to Luke. Expensive, but the example just reinforced my values, and beliefs in what I've done. I'm sorry I didn't get the Paypal thing in time. But Nellie (and any other busnut) can have a cup of coffee on me anytime they pass near Pittsburgh. (Or Baltimore/DC if I'm working in those areas).

To you, all my BusNut friends,

I wrote all this in words first, and I had trouble with ponctuations... you'll have to read between the lines once in a while... sorry, I tried to correct, but something always happen half-way through...

I wrote this (first part) on Saturday morning, and then realized I had no way to post. But I¡¦ll include it, just to keep things in (some sort) of order. Anyway, I already wrote it, so why let it go to waste?

Ednj: I made it down to Phillipsburg, NJ, yesterday night, so got a little further from you. Gosh, if I¡¦d known your location, we could have met or coffee or something¡K

But I slept for 11 hours! I woke up as sore as if I just ran a marathon. But I¡¦m floating emotionally and so thankful you guys sprung me out of my mini-nightmare.

In response to you, Greg, please feel free to question these people. I¡¦m sorry that I couldn¡¦t knock this outrageous bill down, and I know you might have¡K but probably not from so far away and over the phone. I just sensed it would have been no use to call you.

It was like being in one of those third world countries, where everybody smiles remorsefully ¡V or looks sideways ¡V while joyously slitting your throat.

I can get more detailed, but to answer your basic questions: After staying with the bus through Saturday night and all day Sunday, I finally got the bus inside and took a room. I called the garage at 8:30 AM (Monday) to see when I should come down. They said they had an ¡¥emergency¡¦ and couldn¡¦t even look at it until mid-afternoon. I called back at 1:30 PM and they said they¡¦d just begun to work on it. I drove straight down there, and the old governor and the new replacement were sitting on the workbench.

They wouldn¡¦t let me stay in the shop, so I went back to my room. At 3:30 PM they called to ask me how to start the bus, saying they wanted to test the air pressure. I explained how to start it, and asked them to call if they had any problems. I sat, and waited, and fretted¡K and watched the storm moving closer. I finally notified the desk I¡¦d be staying awhile.

The next day (Tuesday) at 10:30 AM, the garage called and said the bus was ready.
FYI, the garage closes at 5:00 PM and doesn¡¦t open until 8:00 AM. As they say, ¡¥you do the math.¡¦

BTW, the self-announced ¡¥owner¡¦ (when he was threatening me) turns to not be the ¡¥real¡¦ owner (kind¡¦a like that ¡¥Bare Naked Ladies¡¦ song¡K). He told me that the ¡¥real¡¦ owner was in Florida?!? And that he had no power regarding any arrangement over the bill¡K

***

I am safely parked at Ralph & Jeanne Peters place, a mountaintop outpost in Pennsylvania. Welcomed and fed and entertained, I had my best night¡¦s sleep in a week and feel rested and revived and alive. Last night, Ralph cooked some great burgers and I played a few tunes and we crashed. Today, he gave me a tour through his MCI- 8 (what a great job he¡¦s done!). Then he tested my air system and re-installed one of my mirrors.

And tonight we had pizza and watched the Super Bowl. Well, really, how much better does life get? It¡¦s a far cry from a few days ago, when I was THIS close (picture my thumb and finger nearly touching) to losing everything (God, how I owe you guys!).

And a little bonus: This morning Ralph & Jeanne were blessed with their first great-grandchild!

My trip (from Phillipsburg) was uneventful. [Nice word, ¡¥uneventful!¡¦ I¡¦ll settle for a lot of ¡¥uneventful¡¦ for awhile.]

A report on the bus: It is, of course, a mess ¡V engine covers still off, tools scattered everywhere, and she desperately needs a bath. But I expect you¡¦ve all been there, done that?

On the other hand, she gets stronger every hour she travels¡K she came all the way from Phillipsburg without a downshift (except for going up Ralph¡¦s considerable mountain). Fourth gear the whole way, pulling grades she couldn¡¦t have touched a couple weeks ago. Why? Like you guys told me¡K she just needed to run.

And she¡¦s used no oil, either ¡V at least not enough to show on the stick.

***

I got a tracfone, and I¡¦m working on making a list with all of your information, so, if I get in any trouble, I¡¦ll call you guys. And since I¡¦m out of the frozen tundra, where no one wants to be, I¡¦m sure I would find someone down the road to help me out.

In the next couple of days, I¡¦ll put my little CD packages together and throw them in the mail ASAP to all of you that helped me out.

I love my bus, and I¡¦m so happy being down the road. Gosh I¡¦m happy!! ƒº You guys really saved my life, I love you.

I forgot!

Here's the continuation of Ace's poem:

Hey there Nellie! Heard your making your way south and that"s a good thing!

Anyway, here's a continuation of the poem

Once out of hock, we started to rock,
finally on our way, first stop, P.A.

Stopped at Ralph's, how long, not sure,
to make some dough, sing a tear jerk!

One thing for sure, it certainly feels good
to not depend, on that firewood!

There is more to this story, my journey from home,
but the trip just started, as I begin to rome!

Soon I'll head South, and into the Sun,
as long as my bus, will continue to run.

from the looks of the bus, it's me you will know,
no fancy paint, just left over snow!

TO BE CONTINUED

Thanks Ace :-)

Doing the math as you suggested regarding the actual time they worked on the bus Should give you a lot of bargining power with the real Owner.

I bet if enough pressure is put on the real owner he will adjust the over zealous charges made in his absense.

Just the fact that they had to call you on how to start the bus tells me they spent "billable hours" trying to figure it out before they called you.

I think more pressure needs to be placed on the Vactioning owner as I see it he has more to be worried about now.

To put things in prospective...

My MC9 managed to sink in the sand at the parking facility
while it had been parked there. I had to get it winched out.
The tow company was about 2 miles away, and it took the
guy less time to winch me out, than it's taking to type this out.

That tow company/truck garage -will not- work on a bus.
He said it's too labor intensive; too difficult to get at most of
the engine, without crawling around.
The cost for winching was over $200.

After I first bought my MC9, I took it to a local bus garage
for a bumper-to-bumper inspection, an oil and trans oil change,
a total lube, and to change all the filters.

They didn't change the air filter, didn't hit all the lube joints,
changed only the oil, fuel, and tranny filters, no work or inspection
of the air system, no brake adjustment...... Nothing more than
oil, lube and basic inspection. Total time was less than an hour.
The bill was just over $500.

The guys that Nel called -
-drove over 30 miles to see Nel's bus
-tried to do some work on it "on site".
-helped to transport it 30 miles back to the garage (at nel's request)
-worked on it some more, until 9pm?
-Let Nel stay there, with electricity, all weekend.
-They drained all the tanks, blew out the air lines, checked/cleaned the air dryer.
-Replaced the air governor and checked the system.
-did some other "preventative maintenance" work

They charged her just a little more than what was done to my bus.

I'm trying to figure out why that company is being singled out, when
they could have let Nel sit in the snow, instead of doing whatever
it took, to get her rolling safely.

If that's the "thanks" they're going to get from bus enthusiasts,
I wouldn't blame them if that was the last bus conversion repair they
ever go out on.

It's big boy's toys, with man-sized price tags.

Exactly. I won't drive out of the yard without a couple of grand on hand in case "all hell" breaks loose. Granted I have a 55 year old bus so "all hell" may be closer for me, yet I like to think I have a rig were almost everything has already been replaced at least once (many parts have: new levelers, new air bags, new blower etc..)
A bus is a big expensive rolling home, don't have to pay rent all the time but you'll pay one way or another.
Glad you made it out of there Nellie.

Pat..

I hate to get into a swamp here, but what's right, is right.

No-one would expect any garage to come out on a weekend
for roadside service, and spend as much time as that one did,
for free; It just ain't gonna' happen.

The car dealers are getting 100 bucks an hour down here,
and they won't do anything more than is absolutely necessary.
If the radiator cap is missing, and you didn't ask for one, you
drive it home without one.

I had a water pump installed on that class B I had awhile back,
and the garage whacked me 600+, because he had to pull the
radiator and it took him 6 hours total.

I coulda' done all that in my driveway. I felt ripped off, but
hey... They get what they get, and they're no different than any
other garage.

When I bought my bus, someone here told me that if I couldn't
do at least 80% of the work myself, I better be prepared for
the worst. They were 100% correct!

These are very expensive toys, if you have to rely on someone
else to wind 'em up!

Where THE HELL did you get this info - I read and re-read all the posts - there's nothing in thier about Sabil and Sons

"...-worked on it some more, until 9pm?..."
or
"-Let Nel stay there, with electricity, all weekend."

THAT WAS Saturaday at HER FRIENDS DALES GARAGE - NOT THE TOW COMPANY

all I see is that Sabil & Sons responded with a tow truck (3pm Sunday) (there have a 24/7 service) - they put the BUS in the garage Sunday night and Nel went to a motel - didn't work on the bus till Monday at 1:30Pm

Looks like YOU GOT THE FACTS WRONG - you need too - REREAD MEL's POST and "MAN UP" and put the right info in your post - cause what you posted does not appear to support WANT MEL POSTED - If you look at the time LINES (PLease take the time and REREAD the POSTs)- you'll see that it appears she was overcharged for service hours

Huh?

Nel's text reads:
-----------------------------------------------
This fellow, Dale, tinkered around with this and that but
nothing changed … she still wouldn’t make air. Finally he
just aired the bus from his compressor
(probably should have
done that in the first place) and we headed towards his
garage.
On the way, the bus started making air again.

At this point, he suggested I was good to go. But I said no,
that I’d rather get to his shop where I could plug in
(if
needed) and monitor the compressor awhile (the only decent
decision I’ve made so far). And sure enough, a block before
the shop she stopped working again. And after I got her
parked, she started making air again.

By then it was 9:00 PM and I decided to stay over nightwith
the bus on fast idle. It kept making air, purging normally,
and I was thinking maybe it would be okay. Maybe I could
leave when the sun warmed things up a bit? And then, at
about 1:00AM, she dropped her air pressure. Luckily, I’d
read that ‘stick on the throttle’ trick posted on The Board.
After I got the revs right, I covered the radiator shutters
(open of course, with no air). I stayed warm but ended up
burning 1/3 of my precious fuel – which I’d built up a few
gallons at a time for months… only to watch it disappear
with all this idling since cold weather (and weather related
problems) began.

On Sunday nobody shows up. Ralph Peters had told me it’s
probably the governor. But with nobody at this wilderness
shop and no parts stores open, I followed Ralph’s advice and
opened the compressor intake line, and the lines into the
governor, and gave them a shot of PB Blaster. Then I shut
her down… properly, this time, using the fuel cutoff switch
(per tips from The Board).

The owner of the shop showed up around 3:00 PM. I started
the bus and she started airing up again. But, I must say,
very slowly. We pulled her inside the garage and I got the
cheapest motel I could find.
---------------------------------------------------

I won't bother with the rest, Pete.

If it's safe to understand that "Dale's" garage is where it went to,
then it should be understood that it's "Dale's" garage that did the
work and billing.

What'd I miss? Are there two "Dales"?

Based on what I've read, I don't think Nel was "overcharged".
If I've missed some sort of un-typed step in that adventure,
then I'd sure love to have it pointed out.

None of Nel's problems are something she should feel disgraced over,
crap happens. We all take a spin of the wheel with high hopes, and
sometimes it works out, sometimes is doesn't.

But when you have to depend on someone else, you have to pay
the price. And in that respect Pete, I don't see anything wrong with
that garage's actions. I may not like it, and I may feel that I would have
cut her some slack, but they're the ones that know their overhead and
work load. They charged as they saw fit; they have the right to do so.

And I do not believe anyone should be harrassing them for it.

Like I said, the next time, they may turn a bus conversion away,
rather than put up with the hassle.

Now I'm Confused -

Hopefully Nel will chime in and set the record straight

Perhaps she can explain the Time Line and cast of Players -

so we all can see what transpired. And if there TRULY was an case of OVERCHARGING

Perhaps I misread the post - If that’s true - you have my sincere apology
and I will remove or have IAN remove my post

Naww, no need to, Pete.

It's difficult for either of us (or anyone else for that matter), to give
any sound advice when basing it only on what's been typed into
these forums.

Posted comments by anyone (myself included; specifically) are
often difficult to read and understand; a simple absent comma
can turn a good thought into a horror show.

Maybe the garage overcharged, maybe it didn't, and to who's
standards do we use, to apply our "rating"...

The deed's done. Nel's on her way, and life goes on.

If I ever get another bus..... and I break down up there?
I wouldn't want some garage to tell me to go to hell, due to
some rants and bad publicity from the last guy they helped...

We just have to remember to get an estimate beforehand, and
make sure they know we can't pay any more than that.

Cheers!

"-helped to transport it 30 miles back to the garage (at nel's request) "

I don't think this should be in the mix of costs.

It is usually a common courtesy for the tow truck driver to escort the vehicle that the service call was intiated for. ( he after all was going that way )

After all if it broke down again on the road he would have got the tow ( a little self serving.)

I had made my comments only based on the time line of the info on when they started and when they called to find out how to start it.

Also knowing how easy it is normally to change that govenor out.

That is where I think they took advantage of Nel

Now if she was going South and the truck was going North then yes there should be charges.

JTNG...good post and I agree pretty much with what you posted.

Precisely the reason I sent an email to the garage early on, suggesting they might want to take a look at this thread.

My experience: there are ALWAYS at least two sides..and many, many circumstances.

Curiosity: on a trip several years ago I had to be towed about 1/4 mile. (starter shot--Effingham, Il) The RoadCare folks called the truck, he showed up and said something like "Gee, I thought this would be a Prevost or High end coach and quoted a price much higher than I'll charge you". They even broke the rules and let us stay in the coach, in the shop, (three dogs) till the starter was changed out.

FWIW :-)

Okay… this is Nellie “chiming in.”

First, I am very sorry for the animosity my recent situation is now causing. I felt (and will always feel) such joy at your fellowship, for the community that came together on my behalf. I had determined to let it go – what happened to me on the road – and simply move forward on ways to thank my many valued, and unexpected, friends.

But I’ve been reading these recent posts, and decided to try to clarify some things.

I called the son of the actual owner of Sabil & Sons (thanks Pete, for setting that up) this morning. We had a long talk, and he’s going to email a detailed explanation of the existing charges sometime this afternoon. He said he was sorry we didn’t straighten out the details when I went to pay the bill. Still a lot of question marks on my end, but they can wait until I see the details.

He told me that there shouldn’t be any problem getting the “road service” part reimbursed, that I can send that part of the bill to AAA and get compensation from them. Well, that’s pretty much up to AAA, but I can include his name and phone number in my claim. And, if needed, he’ll talk to them. So that’s good news.

Bear in mind that my initial focus was not to pick a fight with, nor to slander nor disparage Sabil & Sons. My focus was to publicize my situation and maybe get some help (which, thanks to so many of you, I got in SPADES).

Yes, I suspected I’d been ripped off… but I didn’t (initially, at least) get into that. The folks that responded, however, certainly reinforced my suspicion (see my post of January 27, 2009 - 11:05 pm).

To Pete: Having re-read my posts, I see they weren’t as clear as they might have been, but you got the facts essentially straight and nothing you’ve said needs be retracted.

John, I’m truly sorry you got ripped. But I believe in the old saw, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” And I’m not about to let that sort of treatment become my ‘new normal’ just because I own a bus. You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but it is an opinion - in this instance - wholly uninformed. However, my present focus is not to enlighten you, but to get whatever reimbursement I’m entitled to and to get this bill adjusted… or at least satisfactorily explained. Thus, I don’t wish to pour more fuel on the fire until Sabil & Sons has a chance to make things right.

If they do, end of story as far as I’m concerned. I have a wealth of information I haven’t shared (in the interests of keeping things reasonably civil). But it’s only fair that I first share this information privately with the owner, and to give him a chance to explain this bill in detail.

[Oh… to allay any misconception, ‘plugging in’ meant (in my case) the block heater (if I had to shut down the engine) or an interior light (if she kept running].

Thanks to all, and I’ll keep you updated.

Hi Nel!

First of all, I'm not now, or have been, "ripped" over any of
this debacle. I don't find it "humorous, but I certainly have
no reason to be "upset".

What does bother me, is any company that cares enough to
make a road call, deserves a fair shake. Pouncing on the
company, before all the facts are in (as many were intending to),
is unfair to the company.

If they bloated their bill, and did not do what was billed, you have
reason to complain. Having an entire bus crazed community behind
you, would be an asset to everyone, if the garage didn't straighten
things out with you.

But if they charged you what they would charge anyone, and it was
for the work they performed, and that work put you back into
service safely.... I don't think anyone can seriously argue the price.

I read, re-read, and read again (too many times), your comments
in the first post you made. (Pete forced me to)

It's been my understanding, from that first post, that "Dale" was
the individual that worked for the company that's billed you.
That it was "Dale" who drove from that garage to your bus
location, and worked on it there. And he was the one that
followed or led you back to the garage, where you eventually
had the work done.

All of that summation was from your posts, as I reflected to Pete.

So, to clear the air, can you please tell me (and any other that
might be confused), was your first posts accurate, and was:

1. "Dale" the guy that made sure you got to the garage.
2. Was that garage where you finally had the bus repaired.
3. Does "Dale" work for the same company that's billed you.

Everything else, will at least have some rhyme and reason
knowing at least that much.

There's no need to be defensive, I'm not trying to start any
fights, and there's no need to. If you read my previous posts,
I think you might understand that better?

It's too bad you ran into problems. I don't think anyone here
is "Monday night quarterbacking"; what needed to be said,
was said long before you left.

Some of us wished you wouldn't try to go until things were right,
but once you left, I don't think there was any one of us that
wasn't rooting for you 100%.

Like I said, crap happens. Even with the best plans, and the best
equipment, crap happens. You rolled the dice, and took the hit.

So, for those of us that rooted for ya', can ya' please fill in blanks: 1,2,and 3?

I think all of us are still rooting for you, but gee, gal... If the repair shop
helped you, and you're happy with the work, do you really want to beat
them into the turf, threatening the wrath of bus owners and campers
across the world?

It's tough being in business, but to be publicly humiliated, and
perhaps suffer a decrease in business, over what might have been
"fair" treatment by any truck shop standards?

I'm not "ripped", Nel. I just hate lynch mobs.

Aside from that.. Real glad you're safe and sound! Maybe the
"good karma" will remain!

Nel...not to be upset and too sensitive about what one reads here. Or any other place. The world is full of people. People have opinions, thoughts, sensitivities, ideas, advice, criticisms and it goes on and on. I'm confident this ain't your first Rodeo.

Having said that, I'm sure you explained things from your perspective as well as possible...particularly at the moment of frustration and dismay.... just human reaction to a situation and is not necessarily a criticism of you ...... or the event.

Hopefully this will all work out for you and you will be "satisfied" in the end. Meantime, know that the folks on this board, to a person, myself included, most likely mean well in their "help" and comments. I always heard, and believe, experience is the best teacher (wisdom)...

Some of us get carried away, but most often that is due to some experience we have had along the highway.

Welcome to the "real" Bus world. Most of us have been there....and done that!! sometime thru the years. Enuf preachin' for now.....:-) :-)

I just heard from her a few days ago, and she is doing well. I believe she is still in the South Central PA Region - for how much longer, I do not know, and is working on the interior of her bus before heading further south.
