Well, Had a great trip. But on my way back home, the old girl got tired, I guess. She started leaking coolant thought the air box drip tubes. I notice my 8V71N started to heat up. Stop luckily at a truck stop. Added coolant and notice coolant coming from the air box drip tubes. Now my question. Does anybody have an idea where this coolant might be coming from, and does anybody know a mechanic in Columbus Ohio were the old girl sits? By the way she's an 01 Eagle
Thanks in advance AL

Hi.....DO NOT start/run the engine 'till the problem is fixed!! If the antifreeze mixes wth the oil it will thicken the lube oil to the point that it won't pump/circulate and destroy the bearings and crankshaft..........KEN

More than likely it is the head gasket water seals, injector liner or a cracked head, do not run it, water bulid up in the pistons could also bust a liner or bend a connecting rod...

Go to your oil drain plug and just crack it loose, don't remove. If u have water down there it will come out first. If so, you need to get the anti-freeze out of the pan and other internal engine areas quickly. It is highly corrosive to bearing surfaces. Then u have a teardown in order. Start on the side where u notice the water coming from the air-box drain tube. The leak could range from the copper ring seal on an injector to a cracked block. Most likely as Dwight said: head gasket seal.

Thanks for all the inputs. I really don't see how the coolant can get in the air box from a head gasket or a cracked head. I've look at a junked 8V71 that has been dissembled and I just don't see that happening. My guess, from what I see is, that any water from a gasket or cracked head, would go to the oil pan, and can not get into the air box. But than again this is not the first time I've been wrong. And I don't want to act like a mechanic because I'm not. So jimaxwell and Dwight could you or somebody else please elaborate on this? Thanks Again AL

Hi Al:
The input you have received thus far is excellent!!!
Remember from school that "Water seeks its level"??
Now a cylinder head on a 71 series usually cracks between the valves, over the top of a piston.
All of your pistons are at different levels of their "Up & Down" stroke.
If a piston is below the "air ports" of the cylinder liner and water drips on top of it, it will run into the air box & out the air box drains and not into the pan.
Also if you have lost an injector tube, the same can occur.
The fact that your engine is not seized makes the repair relatively inexpensive if it is just a cylinder head problem, or head O'ring problem.
Whoever repairs it should check main & rod bearings just to be sure that you have not had oil/water dilution which would cause them to deteriorate.
I hope this HELPS!!!
And I hope your problem is a "Small" one.

May I add just one more possible!!! the only water that contacts the liner is at the top of he liner, the casting of the block is aprox 2" high there this holds the liner. This casting may be cracked ! letting the coolant run down the inner part of the liner directly into the air box. I have a 4-71 that I have this problem with been running it for about 5 years now just adding antifreeze when it gets low but in your case I would tear it down and fix it this crack is repairable Detroit makes a sleeve just for that repair.

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HEAD WAS CRACK JUST A VERY SMALL ANOUNT OF WATER ON THE FLOOR THEN I LET IT SET FOR A FEW MONTHS AND THE ENGIN PISTON WAS ON A DOWN STROKE AND FILL WITH WATER. TRYED TO CRANK AND WOULDNT TURN OVER WATER LOCKED IT. NO HARM TO ENGIN JUST A NEW HEAD AND GASKET SET. IF YOU DO JOB YOUR SELF, ONE TIP, GET TWO HEAD BOLTS CUT THE HEAD OFF TO USE AS LINE-UP PIN TO PUT HEAD BACK ON.
