Hi All. I started my bus today for the first time in about 90 days and thought I'd put a few miles on her for some exercise. At first all was normal, but after a mile or two I noticed that the engine temp was creeping past the desired 180 mark. Of course I turned around and got her home before she got too hot. The coolant was full, at least after about a half a gallon it overflowed. I'm thinking a stuck thermostat..... any other ideas? All input appreciated. She has an 8V71.

If it was working fine when you parked it , and the level is good, I also would think stuck themostat.

Nothing crawled up into the air intake or exhaust and making it breath heavier?

Depending on the level of obstruction, you'll get a rise in temp before you'll get a noticeable loss of power

happy coaching!

Check your fan to see if the clutch is engaged. Are the shutters open if equiped? Shut the air off to the shutters and they should open. Plug the oil return to the crankcase on the fan torus. It will lock the fan on full. It is a lot easier to check these before dumping the antifreeze to check the thermostat. If there is no excess smoke then the air intake is okay.

By experience do not remove the thermostats and try to run it that way if you have the deep bypass thermostats. They need to be in to push the antifreeze into the radiator.

Thanks to all for the great ideas. Let me see if I can cover all the bases. The bus is runnuing well, no excess smoke...fan working fine. I am leaning towards just replacing the stats since it can't hurt. If the problem remains after that, then we'll have a real puzzle on our hands.

Have you tried checking the "heat" on each side of the t-stat with a heat gun?

Jim
David's idea of using a infra red temperature gun is good. You might want to check the rpm of the fan as it will appear to turn as normal but won't be up to speed if the torus isn't getting the oil shut off properly. Check the actual engine temp with the gun as well as the gauge might be wrong although you did say the coolant overflowed. Use the temp gun on the rad to see if it is blocked as well. Just a few other ideas. I hate dropping 20 gallons of antifreeze and then putting it all back.
