Last weekend...we made a trip to Santa Fe NM...really the first uneventful trip that we had taken in our eagle after having a new clutch put in..it is about 349 miles from Lubbock , Tx so we traveled approx 700 miles. In the morning, we are going to Canton, Tx to see the infamous Trades day where about 3 to 4 thousand vendors come each month to sell their wares...I don't know why...but I took the bus in to check the tires and look at the wheels....when they took the nuts off the outer drivers....all the inner lug bolts were screwed on the outside of the flanges...not first, the inner wheel placed on the bolts...then the flanged bolts screwed against
the inner wheel....then the outer wheel put on the flanged bolts and torqued down.......A crowd
gathered around...wondering how we had driven as far as we had without both wheels coming off.

All the improper mounting happened at a shop when they repaired our clutch....Thanks to Our Father in Heaven,... He was certainly watching over us.....now, I hope our wheels are safe and properly attached.

Well David, you are beginning to appreciate the difference between a motorhome & a bus. There must be some generous safety margin in that design, huh?

And our thanks too to God for your safe passage & those who were innocently driving near you. Imagine what 300 lbs of dual tires & rims going 70 would do to a car if they got loose!

Be Safe.

I must be missing something because your description sounds like Budd (stud piloted) duals: Hub, inner wheel, inner nuts, outer wheel, outer nuts.

I think he is describing a Budd setup that was assembled incorrectly as: hub, inner nuts, inner wheel, outer wheel, outer nuts.

I guess that if the inner nuts were long (aluminum size) and the wheels were steel this could be what he's describing. Otherwise I don't think the inner nut threads would come through both wheels.

I was wondering if he had taken a Budd setup which was properly assembled to someone who had only seen hub-piloted wheels and thought it was wrong.

All I know....is that the axle with no wheels attached have bolts sticking out...now place the inner wheel on to the bolts....then secure the wheel with the flanged devices...screwed onto the original bolts sticking out...tighten same...then place the outer wheel upon the flanged bolts and tighten with the nuts....I long for proper names of these wheel fasteners.
