... not having done that route yet, I can only offer this good generic advise beyond lots of cheap "pre-trip surfing" research on your computer:
. don't forget to take your bus, even when they become troublesome they are great to have along (have bed will travel or home away from home )

September is a good time. There are some great hikes that start early in the morning down into the canyon. They take all day. Bring lunch and plenty of water.

Frank...I'm not an AZnoan, rather a Coloradoan...Sept 3rd week usually gets a lot of color... and fewer folks on the road and in the spaces. Aspens also changing along the way. Magnificent.

Are you going to the North rim or the South? Both well worth the trip. Not as many touristas north. If you can do both, I'd make the effort, going south after north.

North is toward Page,AZ...Lake Powell, if you have time and Marble Canyon. BUT...you have to return to Cameron, (roughly 220+- miles) to the south rim. no other practical way to get there.

Snow usually begins to fall by then and could be that a south return would work out for lotsa' new thrills. Then drop down to Flagstaff area and Sedona AZ. Mucho scenery.

Thru Colorado is much further, it you have the time and the $$$$.

Enjoy the trip! :-)

Frank
We were at the Grand Canyon 2 years ago with 43 motorhomes and trailers. What a sight. Words cannot describe the views you will see. Enjoy. One thing we found very useful was a couple of books from Camping World that gave the grades of the hills on all the Interstates. It allowed us to judge the time of day to leave so as to avoid the middle of the day on a steep grade with the chance of overheating. One book covered the east and one covered the west.

We hiked to the bottom in mid-september in 2006...I proposed to Dianne at the bottom...we camed for 3 nights down there.
It is a beautiful and cooler time of year.
We will take the Williams train next time...like Roger said...it is supposed to be very nice!
It can get cool at night there in September, be prepared for that.
We took the road from Flagstaff to the Canyon once...saw a heard of Elk...WOW!
Do see Desert Center and the ruins near there.
