That's an interesting bus. I have a friend who runs a local charter business with a couple of ex-"bloodmobiles". Thank goodness that "surplus" stuff comes up at such good prices occasionally.

One question, though. It quotes this bus as having a "Cummins ISB 5.9 TA-B Series Engine"; what kind of engine is this?

Bruce,
The same engine as in a Dodge pickup.
5.9 Litres (360 ci) Turbocharged-Aftercooled inline 6. 325 hp at 3250 rpm in a 2004 pickup. 160 hp (no aftercooler) at 2500 rpm in an 89 pickup.

There is also a C series, which is 8.3 Litres.
Regards,
George

I drove a medical bus with the same motor in it (automatic trans)for two years and found it to be terribly underpowered. I have a freind who bought one that was an airport shuttle with the 5.9 and found the same thing. The one I drove did not have an aftercooler to my knowledge and I know it would not turn those kinds of rpm (3250), so I am sure that would make a big difference.

I would agree with those assesments.
That engine in a Dodge P/U was first identified as a 6BT. Which meant 6 cyls, B series (5.9L) Turbo. Rated 160 hp at 2500 RPM max.
Next came the 6BTA, added the aftercooler, and upped the hp to 180. That upgrade occurred about '92.
Then they changed the designations, a 6BTA became a 5.9-180.
The fuel injection system has gone through 4 changes, from a single mechanical pump, to the present High Pressure Common Rail. All were very good except the Bosch VP44 on the 98-2000, I think. Don't expect it to go 100K. (My first one went 120K, the second just got out of the 50K guarantee.) About 98, it got 12 more valves.
I think it got "quiet" in 03?
They don't have glow plugs, because they don't need them. There is a 12V manifold heater, with a wait to start light, but mine will start quickly at 19 degrees F without it.
203K and counting on my 04, with two valve adjustments...
No smoke unless you mess with it.

Thank you for the info. My current engine is a 6-cyl, 11.1 liter (680") in-line diesel. It delivers 150 hp at 1650 RPM. It was designed in the '40's although I have no idea when my engine was last overhauled. It was last made in the '70's and it's becoming very hard to find parts overseas (forget it here in N America). It seems strong but I'm keeping an eye out for a US engine. To match with the transmission, I'd like to find a 6-cyl (engine compartment isn't really tight), with about 200 hp at 2000 RPM. Smmoth power, low RPM torque, and reliability are high priorities. I can't imagine that anything but a diesel would fit the bill but ??.

Naturally, running the engine I have is the cheapest solution until it's necessary to change so I'm in no real hurry (although "circumstances could accelerate that"!!). My current engine starts well, doesn't burn oil, and runs strongly (for what it is) and smoothly and is good for just under 60 MPH on the flat so it's no "sportscar" but it gets 12+ MPG. There's probably a good N American engine out there somewhere but this Cummins (3200 RPM) doesn't seem to be it.

But thanks for the info (and apologies for the thread-jack).
