I have a 04 repowered w/ 6v92t & 730 autotrans for 100k miles now that runs great. Problem is the annoying vibration in driveline. Have been advised to install a 4106 or newer third member into my original rear axle banjo housing. This axle would then be flipped over to properly align driveline. My Question is: Can I install a complete rear axle assy from 4106 or newer to solve this problem instead of flipping original??
Would this not be less work than having to modify, fabricate, weld my existing 04 axle to accomodate brake & air bag mounts? Sure would appreciate any help here.
Thanks, Joe

I had a vibration in my MC5 at 50 in 3rd gear. It turned out to be in the supension, as I raised the rear end I found that the vibration disapeared. I don't know about the u joints in a GMC but it's worth a check. Neil

Axle does not need to be flipped over. Just change to an '06 or newer 3rd member. Housing may need to be "clearanced" for the ring gear, but you'll still have gasket area left. The 35' coaches had a 4.11 standard; the 40' ran a 4.38 although either coach could be ordered with either gear. The 4.11 is getting hard to find.

The '04 axles will work. I have over 50,000 on my 6V92/V730 with no problems. (Just finished 11,000 miles in Alaska without a single malfunction.)

Hi Jim
Your info gives me encouragement. However I am a bit amiss as the previous owner who had the engine conversion done 100k miles ago tried the 06 3rd member & reported to me that it vibrated as bad or worse. He then switched back to original 04 unit after 1000 miles. I will be willing to give it a go though after further review. I now have the 4.11 gears, wound out tight at 68-70mph. Perhaps I can find a lower gear set to increase top speed? Thanks, Joe

Joe -

The 4.11 gearset you now have is the "tallest" available for the angle drives. All the others are more for city transit use (4:56, 5:38, etc.)

One option is to go to (if you haven't already) 11R24.5 tires that turn 470-475 revs per mile.

Another is to use a VS2-8 tranny, rather than the V-730. If you find one with the .72 overdrive, your coach will run over 80 mph on the flats, but will instantly slow to a crawl on a hill.

It's all a compromise. . .

Somehow I was lead to beleive there were 06 gear sets 3.58 or 3.73 or so. Must have been wrong, so I appreciate your input.

I have nice newer Michelin tires 12R22.5 on those pretty fancy Alcoas, so can't compromise them!!
They "look fast" just sitting!! Of course, I can't see 'em when I am staring at the speedo...Hmmm.

Is installing the 06 rear axle basically a "bolt-in" job? Or would there be a number of modifications?

I have a line on a couple old 06 junkers in Minnesota that could rea$onably donate the axle. One for $500 @ BC Mag, but don't think I could handle the rest of the junker & effort here in CA. Have helping hand$$ in MN.

BTW, this cherry old 04 is VIN 1503. Came from a Winn Bus lines, Richmond, VA.

Can you tell me the "real history" in dabook??

So Helps Alot!! Joe

I read on the other board that your current top speed is only 68mph with the "4.11" rear end? I believe you may have another problem because with the 12R-22.5 tires you have and that rear end you should be going a lot faster. On my RTS with a 4:10 rear end 6V92TA/V730 and 315 80R 22.5 tires I can do close to 80 mph at 2300 rpms. Are you sure you don't have the V730 with the 1:04 final drive ratio instead of the .875:1 final drive? There a few of those "underdrive" V730's around that came out of transits, usually mated to 6V71's for running around town. The only way to see which V730 you have is to take the serial number off the transmission and have an Allison dealer pull the build sheet on it see which final drive was used-- either the .875 or the 1.04.

Geoff,

Thanks for the tip. I will get the 730 serial number & have it checked out for gear ratio.
I imagine that change would not be practical w/o mucho $$$?? The whole engine & trans package came from Nimco NJ in 1995. Used from a transit. I would think the package would be from one & same complete bus. Maybe they piecemealed it together and switched trannys.

Yes, that would explain your problem-- there is a 12 mph difference in top speed between the two trannys.

Geoff,

Do you have an idea of how much time & cost it may take to R&R trans & change this gear set out??
Or a place that can do it? Joe@ Palm Desert,CA

I would replace the whole transmission rather than go to the expense of changing out the final drive (check with an Allison shop on this one, though). You are close to Riverside, and there are a number of bus yards and shops out there. You might check with Dreamliner
http://www.gmbus.com/
in Perris, CA. I have never dealt with him maybe others on this board is familiar with his operation. Besides your tranmission, it might be a good time to replace your rear end with one out of a 4106.

Geoff,
I email Loren & got a reply. He does't hae the 4106 differential I need. So I am looking. Do you know of any junk 06s or diffs for reasonable$?
Will check into trans after the vibration problem is gone. Joe

Joe,

The position of the engine/trans cradle can be installed several inches right or left. In fact there is room for an 8V92 in there! If your cradle is not positioned properly to align the drive shaft, you won't get rid of the vibration no matter what third member you have. You probably didn't want to hear this. HTH

Hi Jim,
My engine is positioned too far to the right. It is I beleive however lined up correctly. The clearance from RH side door to trans is about 2".
So either need to move engine about 5" to left or flip the axle over. Doing the flip will give the 5" by the fact the 04 differential is offset to the left from center about 2-5/16". The 4106 & newer position is about 2-5/16" to the right of center. So in this case I am pretty confident we will achieve a solution to the annoying vibration as has been the solution shared by another new freind I found here off the board!! Still gaining info here & yours helps. Also still looking for the 06 diff needed before we start
Thanks, Joe

Joe, I would think the flip with a 06 pig is the best solution, My understanding is that using a plasma cutter the pads are cleanly removed then re-welded on the flip-side, this achieves the proper alignment, the driveshaft is re-built to the proper length.

If you can locate Terry Bennett Bus works he has done a bunch of 4104 re-powers and is familiar with the flips and the bulkhead reinforcements.

The last phone #'s I have for him are 6 years old W-941-439-7590 H-941-439-5569 if these don't work someone on the board might know how to contact him.
