Have a chance to pick up a low hours Yanmar diesel genset. Unit is air cooled. Any thoughts on the chance of a quiet installation??

Diesel + air cooled = difficult instalation as the cooling air going IN and going OUT will both need a sound capturing maze to help.

More a matter of how much room you have for sound deadening and the coat of the good stuff .

Look at Soundown , or one of the noise deadening sites for costs.
The 2inch lead captured sheets are quietest.

Emery, one other thing. The additional surface area of the fins on an air cooled motor means more sound transmitted from the metal to the surrounding air. In water cooled engines, the water jacket may help kill some of the noise, too.

This means that you will be starting out with a disadvantage in trying to reduce the noise, if you have an air cooled engine.

This type of generator is often used in fishing boats to heat up their engine rooms. As you might guess, you wear earmuffs or earplugs if you wish to protect your hearing.

This might be worth a little thought.
