I have noticed the Kubota GL6500-s Water cooled Diesel Gen Set on Ebay NIB available for about $3700.00. The unit is in a sound proofed box and is available with a remote fuel attachment (it has its own tank as well. Size is similar to the Onans. any comments on this genset, good or bad? thanks for the help |

This model, if I remember correctly, is a 3600rpm unit and so will be far more noisier than the 1800rpm gensets. I am sure the one I saw advertised is a 2 cylinder motor which will be nowhere near as smooth as the 3 and 4 cylinder gensets. These may be an upgrade on the old China diesel units with the addition of the "quiet" box. I think I would like to see and hear one before I bought it. Peter. |

A few people have bought these units and installed them in their buses. They use a 2 cly Kubota water cooled engine. As I remember, one person had no problems, another have a failure of some sort. These units run at 3200 rpm driving a 2-pole generator end at 3600 rpm using a belt and pulley system, so there is maintenance there. They are advertised as running quiet (67 dbl) but I also would like to hear one run. It may work out for you, it certainly saves a lot of work not having to build a sound enclosure for it. But keep in mind they units are not as durable as a water-cooled 1800 rpm diesel unit. If you look back in the items for sale section of this board you will see a recent post asking about diesel gensets-- I posted a link to a unit similar to the one you are looking at on e-bay. This unit didn't sell, perhaps the owner would still sell it if you contact him. It was about a $1,000 cheaper than what you are looking at and it is the same thing, just another brand. --Geoff '82 RTS w/ 7kW Isuzu water cooled 1800 rpm diesel genset |

I have a GL6500S Generator in my Crown. It runs fairly quiet, but mine needs some work. Someone put a different alt on it which is less than 6.5kw. The unit is very nice and durable, but at 500 pounds is quite heavy! It also required a large enclosure (I don't have the exact dimensions. Let me know and I'll pull a tape on it). I've put a Honda muffler on mine and it really reduced the noise. By the way, if anyone knows where I can get a used power head (original) for this unit I would sure appreciate it! |
