Actually, what NAPA stocks varies greatly from location to location.

Many NAPA locations have always stocked CF-2 in 40-weight, including Rotella-T which meets DD specs. (Unfortunately, many only stock Delo-400, which does not.)

OTOH, some NAPA locations currently do not stock 40-weight, and that would include the last three I tried in NM, UT, and WA.

NAPA locations are independently owned and operated, and it is up to the individual location what they choose to stock.

I just ask my NAPA dealer to get it for me and they do. The closer you are to a large body of water the better the chance they stock it. Mobile, Al. stocks it and Grand Rapids, Mi. stocks it

Believe it or not, O'Rileys does stock the correct oil for our two strokes. I called the only store here in Abilene and they were out and I needed it now. Flying J does not, at least the one on I-2- in Abilene. I was lucky to find all I need at a local oil distributor in Rotella and Chevron, they have pallets of each, that was a nice suprise! Our NAPA store does not stock it but can get it. NAPA is my first choice for filters and most stuff, if they don't have it, they'll get it quick.

Paul Out here in the WEST I have never seen a O'Rileys store. I had 4 gallons of Rotella 40 and I needed enough for a oil change and stopped at 8 different stores did not have ANY 40 wt oil whatsoever except delo 400 which does not meet the specs.

Here in CT one either goes to the NAPA dist center , or calls the local store , which will have it in a couple of hours.

Pricing at NAPA , is always a hassle as they have 3 or 4 sets of "discounts".

I frequent NAPA often, and get my Rotella 40 WT there, however I have found them to be unfavorable on their oil filters($25.50about) VS Advanced Auto @ $17.50. Fram.

I have found this to be true in North Carolina. My bus originally spec'd 10W-30 diesel-spec oil. I wrote the Shell tech line and they said that they have a 10W-30 Rotella and the local NAPA store said that they could order it for me. But the Shell guy also told me that the 10W-30 Rotella is right at the top of the 10 and 30 viscosity ranges and that the 15W-40 is a better diesel oil (for my 4-stroke) so that's what I'm going with. (Of course, the 15W-40 is much more available, which is a plus, too. I'm not worried about the extra weight - some people with my engine use SAE40 straight-weight and start up OK in near-freezing temps.)

But I was glad to hear that NAPA can order items that you don't often see stocked.

Gary there is a reason Fram filters are cheaper. Check out the following study

"last updated 09/07/99"

Interesting , but the opposite if what Consumer Reports found in terms of Fram more recently ..

CR found Fram did the best job of ACTUALLY FILTERING oil on the first pass.

O'Reillys and Kragen are the same store, and it looks like the Kragen name is being phased out.

I would hesitate to call Mr. Knize's ten year old write-up a "study" -- he states right up front that it is all just his personal opinion: no testing involved. That being said, I also tend to shy away from Fram and other consumer-grade filters in favor of Baldwin and Fleetgard. I do buy Napa Gold, made by Wix Filtration, when I don't have easy access to a Baldwin or Cummins supplier.

BTW O'Reilly and Kragen are not the same store -- yet. O'Reilly bought CSK Auto (Checker, Schuck's, Kragen -- which were all the same just different names -- and Murray's Discount which CSK bought a little while ago) last year, and has been working steadily to integrate them.

At this time, they share a consolidated web presence, but the retail outlets are not yet fully integrated onto the same ordering and distribution system. O'Reilly has, indeed, announced that it will eventually rebrand the CSK outlets under the O'Reilly name. At this moment, though, I would not count on a Kragen location to have full access to all the same stock that O'Reilly carries, and that would include straight 40-weight oil.

FWIW.

Tim,
Thanks for the heads up, this could shape up as an oil thread. I am surprised that Fram would prostitute their "quality" name, for profits, but I am not too naive to either.

I will check with some motor freight lines as to what they use. I would think Baldwin & Fleetgard would be fine, as Sean indicated, but I am not keeping up w/ the latest.
Thanks all for your research.
