The Rubber let go on my battery compartment door has anyone tried to replace this hinge with either a piano hinge or regular hinges.

Thanks

I do need to do the same thing, have a stainless steel hinge install, but there is always that spark mixed with hydrogen concern. No doubt why they used rubber-at the MCI factory. But I have seen flyer, bluebird, thomas & wayne school buses that used steel on there enclosed battery boxes. Perhaps a brass hinge would be the compromise.

As cheap and easy to replace with the rubber hinge, why change at all? The rubber hinge is really cheap from MCI. A little vegetable oil, insert into door first, then slide door onto coach, presto, it's over in 5 minutes. No drilling, bucking stainless rivots, etc.

Barry -

I agree with Mark - done right, with OEM materials, it should last you five or more years.

Be sure to clean the channel well on both door and coach body - a .22 long rifle cleaning brush works really well.

Not sure about the vegetable oil. . . I use a water-based food-grade spray silicone lubricant, others have used Dawn dishwashing soap (keep it wet), electrician's yellow goop that's used to pull wire thru conduit, even K-Y Jelly! Just don't use a petroleum-based oil or spray (like WD-40), it will break down the rubber hinge fairly quickly.

MCI Parts, or call Luke (1-888-262-2434).

If you really want to go to a metal hinge, I can post a photo of what NOT to do!

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

I installed new rubber hinge from MCI in 1996 It lasted 3 mons. Replaced them with stainless piano hinge and still working. The compartment has plenty of air so You don,t have to worry about gas vapors.

I installed new rubber hinge 5 years ago on front drivers side baggage door still looks new. (I get it from Universal Coach Parts Inc. 1-800-323-1238 1-800-241-2947 you can set-up an account with them.) First Clean both Channels You have to use some kind of slick stuff that will not damage Rubber I use dish soap put the hinge on the coach first then you need two people to hold door at 45 degrees and slowly run door onto the rubber make sure that you do not damage the rubber then rinse off the soap and spray on Protection for UV rays just like you do a dash board in a car to keep it New and to last in the sun or keep it Under cover I live full time so the UV Protection works for Me.
