I don't know if this is the beat place to post this query, but you folks mostly come through with some help (except where to install my air dehyrdrator)

I want to install head phones between my amplifyer and speakers in my in-dash 12V radio. The head unit has no amp. Radioshack used to have a unit with bypass switch and volume, but no more. Any suggestions?

Darrell - Can you clarify the purpose? Are the headphones to be used for music listening while driving? I believe that many states have laws against wearing headphones while driving (particularly if both ears are used.)

If it is to be used while parked, or for CB radio use, and whether you want stereo or mono will impact the answers and recommendations.

I quit listening to the radio years ago...got tired of the same 10 songs, the commercials, and DJ's that have to shout at you and try too hard to be funny. Instead i listen to my wife, and the bus or the car that i am driving. Have heard things several that could have turned into big problems if i had not caught them when i did. Have driven as far as 1500 miles several times by myself and never turned the radio on......not even sure if it still works, and don't really care if it does. :>)

Ditto edHACK, I perfer the sound of equipment being diligently monitored by all my senses.

-The only time I ever have radio going is do drown out a passenger from bitching at me. Not like you can get any real news anymore from the 3 or 4 syndicates that own the whole shebang either.

The radio may have enough power to run a head set. You can buy a stereo jack that has a cut off switch built in: you plug in the headset and the speakers turn off. Available at radio shack.

Yeah Darrell, ditto "Doug yes"!

Rat Shack has the jack, and it's simple to wire in. You'd use the
radio's volume control to set the headset volume.

The downside of course, is the problem of keeping the headset's
cord from getting tangled in the steering wheel. The plastic wheel
and the plastic covering of the headset wire are like magnets. The
damned wire will stick to the wheel at the most inopportune times.
(like during quick turns)

You can avoid that by slopping grease on the steering wheel.

(Just kiddin'; don't try this at home)

They make wireless headsets.... but for all the trouble it's worth to
do all that, it would seem a whole lot easier to simply mount a
decent speaker (two for stereo) at head height, or over your head
at the driver's seat.

You would get the same effect of a headset, without having to
wear a headset.

Good luck!

You might want to check with the local cops , I thought driving with a headset was illegal?

You won't get any sound between the head unit and the amplifier. Typically a headphone conversion would be added between the amplifier and the speakers so you could choose either speakers or headphones. I believe RS still makes it. Good Luck, TomC
