Hi folks, Just a head's up on this one, friends... I just booked Maisie 'n' me into the Grand Canyon Caverns Inn (http://www.gccaverns.com/GCCInn.html) where they seem to think they are going to host a certain coach conversion convention in April. Since there are only 48 rooms, I'd suggest that unless you bring your own accommodations, you'd best get on the phone to Karen at 928.422.3223. Just thought you'd like to know! Regards, Ian Giffin www.busnut.com |

Good tip, Ian. I did an Internet search when I first heard the MAK convention was being moved and the Inn was the only place I could find in that location. I did not find any RV parks near there so I am assuming this is going to be a noisy dry camping convention. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Sounds like the start of another fiasco, like the Sacramento one a few years ago. Lots of people got screwed out of money or plane tickets, hotel rooms, etc. I met one couple who had flown in from Dallas and another couple who came in from Australia. Many, many people lost money on non-refundable hotel room reservations, airline tickets and travel from all over the country to find out on arrival that it had been cancelled. I am sure many vendors also lost their deposit as well as any other expenses they encountered in preparing for the event. For those newbies who are not aware of what happened, the Sacramento convention was cancelled at the last minute supposedly due to a personal protest by MAK against the state of California not allowing 45 ft. conversions travel in the state. Probably not more than a dozen 45 ft. units were subject to that law, which was not really being enforced by the state anyhow. Some of us got together at another location in Sacramento and believe me there were really a lot of unhappy campers. The scuttlebutt at this get together was that it was a financial problem and he did shut down his bus sales and conversion business a short time later, but no one ever knew for sure what really happened. I know that I have refused to make plans to go to another one since then. Richard |

It is good to know that my wife and I are not the only ones that have been screwed by MAK. |

I have been there a number of years ago and I am sure that nothing has changed, meaning that there is nothing there. The only space I know of is an airstrip down the road about 1 mile from the motel and about 1-1/2 mile from the caverns. Also don't expect a high end motel, its not.>>>Dan |

I didn't know about the problem a few years ago - thanks for the heads-up. I was thinking about attending this one, but if it is going to move at this late date (late for convention planning), I think I will have to pass. What about Laughlin? Isn't there something every year there? |

Doug, this is the same convention. Originally scheduled for Laughlin and now moved to the new location. It is advertised in the current issue of Bus Conversions Magazine (December 2002 issue) as being held in Laughlin, NV. Just received the magazine today and the publisher is literally begging for people to pre-register ($225 per couple, per coach) so they can attract more exhibitors and have a better convention. I wonder if the people that have already registered to attend, believing that it was to be held in Laughlin, will get a refund if they do not want to go to the wasteland of the caverns with no casino’s or river or hookups, or restaurants or anything else in sight. Guess I am a very skeptical type, but the editorial column sounds like a swan song to me, at least for the annual convention. Richard |

Thanks for the information Richard and all. Since I haven't been to a bus convention/gathering/party, etc, Which one would any of you suggest as a good starting point? |

I would suggest Jack Conrads Bussin 2003 in Arcadia, FL next month. Very informal, a chance to meet a lot of Nuts that are actually doing their own conversions and a chance to get a lot of ideas. Details are on the homepage of this board. Richard |

Grand Canyon Caverns? Almost as much fun as having it at the Rest Area outside of Needles. I'm going to John and Desta Marburys Ranch Kitchen in Gallup. Good people, good food and a lot cheaper. Stop by and see us. Jim |

The biggest problem I have had with the BC Convention is that it is way out West. Why not just do what the Sun n Fun Fly in does and book it at a good spot just outside snowbird season (for better rates). Maybe the Texas hill country for the wild flowers. I'd sure hate to drive all the way to AZ to find a weak rally. Exibiters for most conventions like places that are accessable. The North rim of the Grand Canyon might not qualify. Looked pretty desolate when I flew out there. I love out of the way places, but not for a convention. Hey Ian, lets just have them move it to Newfoundland. Maybe we should have a caravan / rally to Newfoundland. I was just there this summer and I would go back again and again. Imagine the 550 ft enclosed ferry, the "Joseph Smallwood", filled up end to end and side to side with bus conversions. Camping allowed anywhere you can pull off the road. Culture and scenery unlike anything else. A thousand year old viking Camp. April would be a little early for NF though. |

And with "dollars " costing only 56c a dream for those that enter museums , visit campgrounds , or eat out . PEI in July sounds better for those adverse to COLD. FAST FRED |
