I have a (new) 4104 with 6-71 and 4-speed. Would like to add cruise, any tips or recommendations on units and installation? Pros and Cons. Thanks. |

Well the old PD-4104 has a "poor man's" cruise control already on it. The Tee handle above the brake and foot feed pedals on the right side. It' a hand throttle Out on a uncrowded interstate you can pull it out and turn to lock and maintain the speed you want. Been there and done that with my old 4104. Just be careful don't get to close behind some one and run over them. As for a real cruise control I havent any idea. jlv |

I put cruise on my 4104. Best thing I ever did. Only problem is that it kicks off if speed falls more than 5MPH for 30 sec or so as in climbing a hill. This happens 'cause the 4104 doesn't have enough power to hold the speed on even a highway overpass. The cruise has a safety system in it so if you crashed, it would release instead of going to W.O.T. The cruise works great on relatively flat country. If I see a small hill coming, I just step on it before the hill to get up steam. If the speed still falls off, (big hill) the cruise drops out & you have to turn it off & back on & reset the speed. Bought the cruise kit from Steve Sanford. e-mail me & I will try to get you in touch with him. |

The Rostra cruise control Jim-Bob bought from Steve Sanford works excellent with an air throttle-- I have one in my RTS with the air throttle. There is also the King Cruise control, but it costs 3-4 times as much as the Rostra. |

I have the King control and it works great. The only time it drops out is under about 35 MPH as most cruise controls do. Although I have a 450 hp in my Eagle, it many times drops 5 mph in rolling countryside. When I am going up a longer grade I manually shift the auto trans into a lower gear as necessary, and never have to use the throttle. I think I would spend the extra bucks for the King system if that 5mph underspeed feature can not be eliminated. I think that would get extremely annoying. The King control also has a fast idle feature which is very handy sometimes. Richard |

Actually if it has a 30 second disconnect if the speed drops that would be a good thing-- you shouldn't keep your throttle to the floor if you keep dropping speed-- you'll be overfueling the engine. If it is time to downshift it is time to downshift, not use your cruise control. Anyway, I never use my cruise contol climbing a big hill, but having an engine with some power has a lot to do with the cruise control and slowing down on hills. Also, the Rostra have several dip switch settings, you may need to adjust the sensitivity if it is dropping out too soon. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Here is a web page about the Rostra unit, along with Steve's phone number and address. When looking at the pictures please note that the nut he welded on the accelerator pedal is not necessary-- I was able to attach the cable to the back of the pedal so you don't see it. http://www.gowheels.com/cruise/ --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

I bought a cruise from Steve for my Prevost. It works great, however the resume switch never worked and after many promises of a new switch Steve has yet to send it. Now he does not even answer my E-Mails. I have offered to pay for the switch , still no response.Where else can I get one? |

Rostra is the company that took over the old Dana/Perfect Circle speed control products. Just do a web search for Rostra Cruise Controls and their corporate website will come up with a list of dealers. |

You do not need to do a web search. Click on the link above posted by Geoff. When you get there, there is a link to Rostra. Click on it and find your nearest distributor. Richard |

I have a King KC-2500 on my 4106 and it works great. It was about $800 for the kit. Would have liked to spent less but when is that not the case. Joe 4106-2119 |

Geoff, on long, multi mile upgrades such as the Grapevine or Baker pass into Las Vegas the cruise control works great and is really a leg saver. I manually shift my auto tranny down until I am maintaining at least 1800 RPM or higher. (8V92). Many times I am below 45 MPH. I get no indication of over fueling (smoke). Do you think this harms the engine? Richard |

Hi, Richard, what you are doing is absolutely the correct approach-- what do you do? find the right gear at the right rpm and THEN set the cruise?-- that would work, as long as the grade doesn't get worse. For me, I just turn off the cruise and use my foot for the long grade and watch my rpms, my pyrometer, and my engine temperature gauge. Although I must confess that everytime I go to Oregon and climb the Sisku's I seem to get caught up in a power play with some trucker who doesn't want me to pass them, resulting in soot on the back of my bus! Gettting back to your original question, the only harm in using the cruise going up a mountain would be if the rpms fell below say 1700 and the cruise kept the pedal to the floor. This could easily result in overheating the clyinders and seizing a clyinder. This situation is also more likey to occur if you are running oversized injectors, with standard sized injectors your power will drop off quicker and you will naturally be forced to downshift. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Geoff, I never touch my cruise control. It is typically set at 65-68 MPH. As I approach a grade, I watch my rpm and when it drops to 1700-1750 I pull the tranny shifter down into the next lower gear. As the bus continues to slow, it will typically shift at about 1600 RPM to the next lower gear. Controls within the transmission prevent it from shifting sooner. RPM now increases back to the 2000-2100 RPM range. If I did not manually pull the shift lever down, the tranny would not shift till about 1400, which is way too low in my opinion. I continue to monitor RPM (and engine temperature) and manually shift down as necessary to remain in the 1700-2100 RPM range. I occasionally have to use my radiator mister to maintain coolant temperature below 200 degrees. I never see any indication of black smoke, although I assume the cruise control is holding the rack all the way open to full fuel position. Do you think this procedure is OK? Richard |

Sure, it's okay. You have the big 8V92TA and four speed so you can maintain your speed up the hill by simply downshifting. When I downshift my V730 into second I'm down to 50-55 mph, so I turn off the cruise by touching the brake to disconnect. When I get over the top I hit the resume button. Did I mention I love having cruise control? --Geoff |

I love it too. I had mine quit once just as I left California for Florida, and what a horrible trip. You really never know just how much you do love it until something like that happens. Richard |
