My 6V92TA DDECIV had an intermitten smoke problem on start up. I would start it and it would smoke for about 2 minutes so bad you couldn't see the area around the bus. You never knew when this would happen and lately it would not stop smoking unless I shut the engine off and restarted it. I recently received a call from Pete Papas in FL about an unrelated problem a bus nut was having with his bus and in the course of our conversation Pete mentioned about the DDEC computers being voltage sensitive. Pete mentioned about connecting the power for the DDEC computer to the auxillary batteries to provide a constant supply voltage. I did this about a month ago and NO MORE SMOKE. The problem seemed to be low voltage when the starter was engaged. This problem has bugged myself and another bus nut with the same engine for two years. I have talked to so many DD foremen and mechanics I have lost count. I have added an electric fuel pump to prime the fuel system plus so many other suggestions by DD people there seemed no other things to do. Thanks to a conversation with Pete my problem is solved. More proof this board is the best place for help when even DD dosen't have any answers.

huh... my bus is a smoker too. I figured the 8v92 motor just needs to be rebuilt... The motor purrs beautifully, and has lots of power. It leaks oil like crazy (compared to my truck). I wonder if perhaps I could try testing it out by attaching auxiliary batteries as well... Will this only remedy the DDEC's need for more power during start up, or could it actually be the problem it may be emitting more fuel than it is supposed to efficiently burn? I may not sound like I know what I am talking about, because I really don't...

hojji
Once the alternator starts to charge the low voltage problem would be gone. In my case I have to rev up the engine to 1200 rpm to have the engine start charging but when the smoke problem occured I had no acceleration till it stopped smoking. In your case it sounds like an over haul is needed to stop the smoke issue.

usually bad rings go along with increased leakage.; more crankcase pressure than vents on crankcase can handle. This is generally the same on gasoline engines.

ah.... well, typical... That would have been too easy... I googled detroit diesel, and there are locations in my area... I am not looking forward to the OVERHAUL you speak of... I really got scammed on this bus. I have made it into a real beauty, but I sure would feel better about it, and trust driving it more, if the guy I bought it from hadn't lied to me about so many of it's issues, thus having to repair and place a lot more on it than my last bus...

Hojji,

If it's black smoke it's all good, it takes fuel to make a fire. If it is light blue or white then you might start thinking about some more discussion.

Hows that air filter?

Leaks can be chased down and fixed. Lots of times leaks are simple fixes. One loose oil line under pressure will throw alot of oil around. Clean it up a little and take a close look to see where the oil is comming from, there's a good chance it's something you can fix.

Your bus looks cool. Nice ride!

thanks... I work on it constantly.. I wish I could get this thing in the air and really get a better view underneath (as well as pressure wash it under there). My last bus was a 1988 international school bus, and because of the lack of storage bays, had a huge crawl space that made it a lot easier to get under.... I will continue to clean it up and uncover little problems.... The air filter seems pretty clean, I pulled it out and knocked the dust out of it yesterday... it didn't seem that bad...

white smoke means coolant in the fuel?

Wikepedia says:
Answer #1:
White smoke from a diesel engine could be normal when it is very humid and cold, the engine is cold, the glow plugs are not working to their full potential as long as the white smoke is not excessive. It also could be an indication of a head gasket sealing problem. Most will not leak after running a while, due to extreme cylinder pressure. After the engine rests with combustion pressure in the coolant system, the coolant can work it's way back into the cylinders through the failing gasket sealing surface. If this happens and causes a hydro lock condition. Combine that with a high torque diesel starter and you may need a rebuild or possibly a new engine assembly. So make sure that your coolant level is full, and is not dark in color or smells like diesel exhaust (smells like a weird spice in the coolant, almost like someone put black pepper and gunpowder in it)
Answer #2
White smoke is from unburnt fuel or moisture in the combustion chamber.
Could also be EGR cooler. Just had to have mine replaced. It suppodely can leak enough anti-freeze into the cylinder to lock the engine down. Probably needs to be addressed ASAP

my oil is not white, milky, or showing any signs of coolant/water in it though... My old truck blew a head gasket a number of years ago (nightmare), so i am kind of familiar with the tell tale signs...

Hojii

Get an oil analysis. It's inexpensive and will tell you the condition of your engine. Here's a link with sample reports. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/diesel-engine.php Check with DD,they may sell the kits also.

Does it smoke like this peddle to the medal (going full out in any gear) and stay Smoking?
the 2 strokes do like to be going full tilt.

honestly, i don't know exactly. I have been working on the conversion over the last year, and have only driven it about 200 miles... I just remember driving it home thinking holy sh*t!!! I do think it may have been slightly better on the flat freeway that it was going slower (as in this pic) or up the mountains canyons...
I just remembered, I have the oil still... (in buckets) I will send off a sample to the link posted... thanks a lot...

You Might be just fine and need to fix some leaks their are a lot of points on the engine you can tighten that do come lose and leak oil even the oil pan sometimes comes lose just make sure you tighten in the right order and to DA BOOK!

If I'm on a 2 lane I will Run her at the top of the Gear that is the closest to the speed I need they Do love to run Full Out and nothing Else.

You have a 8V92 right The Silver Top and they also Called this engine The Fuel Squeezer.

2 strokes just load up. 200 miles in a year is not enough to clean it up if you start it very much.

It wants to go somewhere.

Lots of white smoke all the time is usually coolant in the combustion chamber, not the fuel.

Rob is right on on how to drive it. I always take mine right to the governor when I leave the shop and just hold it there in low gear until it cleans up. Other wise it will look like your picture for several miles.

coolant in the combustion chamber? that sounds bad, not as scary as in the oil, but could be worse if I knew where it was, or what that means to my motor...

Hojji -

"is it possible to drive like that with an automatic transmission?"

Sure it is - simply shift it manually.

Bob –

Thanks for posting the link to Blackstone Laboratories. I actually just ordered a kit for myself. It seems that my purchase experience was very similar to that of Hojji’s, and I too am interested in finding out the condition of my old DD.

Hojji –

I was hosed too by the guy from whom I bought my bus. Over the past year, I have invested several grand into it…mostly due to his lies! Mine appears to be running fine, other than having a smashed muffler, but after reading through this thread, I will definitely feel better when I get the report back from the lab. Good Luck with your coach!

Josh
