Howcome Detroit Diesel and Cummins no longer produce V engines for vehicles? All cummins engines as I know it are inline. DD series 50, 60, 40 are inline too. Are they advantages to this? A V config. would take up less room. |

The 6 cylinder is the smooothest of the layouts possible , unless you want a "boxer ' like a BMW bike or an old VW. FAST FRED |

I had the occasion to visit one of the local military salvage yards today...still looking for "slide-out" rails for my genset..and this particular yard owner has a penchant for purchasing heavy equip. and powerplants. There were dozens of 6cyl. "multifuel" units the size of a 671...all in their alum shipping containers with their service records... There were detroit 4-6-8_71's AND even a 12v71 There was a Cat 3406 and a a few GM 8.3 liter diesels Dozens of Continental 4cyl. A/C Gebsets (3.5kw) That 12v71 sure got my "creative juices" flowing, mainly because it "appears" to be only slightly longer than my 8v71.... (if I could only relocate that darn radiator it might slide right in..... THAT would flatten out those mountians!!) This yard has a freeway frontage ... and as a "visual stimulus" for passing traffic... they have parked out front a self propelled cargo lift platform.... it is like a football field on wheels! With a tiny little one man control cab and enough room and hydrolic power to put 2 4106's (50,000lbs.)side by side over 30ft into the sky.... gives new dimension to the term... "do you guys need a lift..?" SO...while I was making mental notes of all the goodies.... I happened to find a pallet with a big old automatic tranny on in.... the plate on the side of the tranny says... GM-COACH Model# XXXXXXXXXXXXXX (I dint have paper&pen along but the number was about 8-12 digits long) this tranny is absolutely for an offset or Vdrive... and to me that could only mean it was from a 4106-7-8 or a 4905.... Does anyone happen to know or have the model #'s from an automatic so I might determine if my assumption is correct? |

Were the Continentals horizontaly opposed and air-cooled? How Much? Older GM autos had a huge V cast into the housing VS2dash 4, or 6 etc. |

On the power rating of the 12V71...just an unedukated guess based on logical deduction...50% more cyls.= 50% more HP...270(+/-)plus 135 = 405... The continentals ARE H/O and A/C...and when I get back that way I will ax him (you can start arranging for my legal defense now). What I was hoping for was that someone else would see the obvious advantage of loding up 2 -06's on the same rig thus saving 50% on the fuel ticket, that PLUS you'd only have to drive half of the time...and you's also get a better view from being from 5 to 30 higher than normal. A fellow could get a good long look down the road ya know..... |

The main reason no one makes Vee type heavy duty diesels (does Mack still make their V8?) is the expense and balancing concerns. Although we still hear all sorts of rumors from Detroit about their coming "Series 70 VEE"s with computer controlled injection and timing and no water..... We are all still waiting holding our breath. Yeah, it is also cheaper to make an inline mill than the V6 or V8. Less parts. Good luck. |
