HAS ANYONE HAD EXPERIENCE WITH TRAVELING TO MEXICO IN THEIR VEHICLE AND PURCHASING MEXICAN INSURANCE. IS IT BETTER TO PURCHASE AT THE BORDER OR PURCHASE AHEAD OF TIME ON THE INTERNET? |

Just got back from a "practice run" to Mazatlan with our toad. Bought insurance from Sanborn near the border in Nogales. Liability is cheap, collision is not! Sanborn has adjusting facilities all through Mexico and are part of the GE Capital Group. AAA has an office in Yuma with insurance sales and both are on the net. Many others at the border towns, but hard to know if they have adjusting facilities down south. Email me if you want some recent travel info (depending on your route) |

Liability insurance must be written on a Mexican insurance company. If you do not have proof of valid liability insurance and you are in a collision, you may be taken to jail and your rig impounded until fault is determined and damages settled. My wife and I share a ?named insured? liability only policy, we can drive anything and we are covered. Only our names and drivers license numbers appear on our proof of insurance cards. That policy costs about $180 per year. If you buy insurance by the day it costs more, starts at about $12 per day... you can purchase at the boarder and the policy would probably be written by the same company thet you would find on the internet. HOLA I pay $58US per year for Mexican Liability through ADA VIS GLOBAL ENTERPRISES INC. Temecula, CA. (800) 909-4457 There is an add for them in the back of the FMCA Magazine. They also have Comprehensive but I don't buy it. The Liability is issued to your drivers license and covers anything you are driving or towing. Some don't know you must have liability for the tow vehicle, trailer, towed vehicle, boat, motorbike etc. I also found out by accident (Mexican Customs) that you are only allowed one musical instrument per person. My wife and I had three guitars. One too many. Make sure you know what you are doing when going to Mexico. Don't just rely on hearsay. Baja is different than the mainland! Hasta La Vista, Joe |

If you really procrastinate, you can take the 'Last US Exit' on I-5 in San Ysidro (if you are going via SD). There are a number of places nearby but we've usually gone to MexInsur. Parking may be tight around there. I have never looked at the lot from a bus perspective as we are always in car, mini-van or SUV. I think the adjacent lot is big enough for a bus if you get lucky on how many adjacent parking spaces you can find open. As others have suggested it would be nice to have it all arranged before you get so close. On another note: I have a question I have wondered about for several years (never had my bus in Mex yet) . . . On the return trip to the US, the Tijuana-San Ysidro border lanes are very crowded and chaotic. Sometimes, just after the US Customs booth, they have very narrow concrete barriors that zig-zag back and forth. I doubt I could squeeze my bus thru those things the way they are arranged sometimes. How do trucks, large RVs and busses know which lane to get into so you don't end up in one of those concrete zig-zag things. By my recollection, if you ended up in the wrong lane, there would be no way to back up and no way to go thru! (maybe there is a turn out to secondary inspection that I overlooked?) Maybe all large vehicles are recommended to go to the Otay Mesa border? Scott |

Scott: The last time I crossed with the Bus, I crossed at San Ysidro. I lined myself up with the Secondary lane, that must be about lane 6, and asked to drive thru Secondary... no problem, it was a straight shot and I slipped right thru. Peter |

So is that way over on the right hand side? (East?) We usually are in the carpool lane (coming from Rosarito) and get fed into the middle border lanes once we pass all the tourist shops on the left. However, the carpool lanes are open to anyone on weekends, so doesn't do much good. . . Here is a picture: http://cwx.prenhall.com/petrucci/medialib/media_portfolio/text_images/FG15_13.JPG Except this picture is taken looking back into Mexico. . . so are the big-vehicle lanes on the left in this pic? Looks like no waiting, if so! Maybe those are just closed lanes. Scott |

The lanes are numbered from the East... the 1, 2 and 3 lanes are for express passes and commercial bus service. I would get over near there if you can and you would have a nearly straight shot out the normal exit. I always skip the toll road and come thru town and it is a bear getting over that far, you end up cutting off 3 or 4 lanes to merge over. The rest are first come, first served. Now that I see the photo it must be Lane 10 or 11 that lines up with the Secondary alley and is a straight thru shot. When I cross with a car (99%) I take the lane in front of the shops, on the west side. That lane splits several times in the last 3 or 4 hundred feet and moves fastest. Peter |
