For some that were panicking at the unavailability of CF2 oil for our 2 cycle engines. From the October 2009 issue of Fleet Owner magazine. Listed motor oil producers and their versions of DDA 2 cycle CF2 oils:
Amalie-XLO HD Fleet Grade oil
American Refining- Gulf Super Duty engine oil
Champion Brands- Champion Premium Heavy Duty oil
Chevron Products Co.- URSA Super Plus Oil
Cenex Lubricants- Super Lube 518
Conoco Phillips- HD Fleet oil
D-A Lubricant Company- DA Reliant oil
Exxon-Mobil- XD-3 oil
Petro Canada Lubricants- Duron oil
Phillips 66- Super HDII oil
Schaffer Mfg.- 702 Supreme 7000 Synthetic oil
76 Lubricants- Guardol QLT oil
Shell- Rotella oil
David Weber Oil Co.- Gibraltar HD Plus CF-2

All of these offered 30, 40, and some 50 weights.
Now you can search these companies and compare their oil specs for lowest ash and whether you have a local distributor.
I'm sure there are more, however these are the ones listed in the magazine.

I called the local Chevron distributor about six months ago and asked about Delo 100 40wt. All they asked was do you want gallons, fives or fifty fives. All in stock.

I can get all I want of Shell Rotella 40 wt. A local oil distributer has pallets of it. They also have it in Chevron. About 11.35 a gallon.

May I point out an error in your list of DD 2 Stroke engine oils: Petro-Canada's Duron is not the recommended oil for 2 Strokes. It is for 4 Strokes. Petrocan makes Dieseltonic 40w specifically for 2 Stroke DD, with an ash content of .7% IIRC. Check it out on their web site. I get it at the local bulk plant. Still lots of 2 Stroke DDs in use around here. (BC Interior).

I carry two cases (12 gallons) always with me-just in case. I had the remote oil filter break off and pumped just about all the oil onto the street. After the mechanic fixed it, I had enough oil to get going again. Always a good idea with the scarcity of suppliers on the road. Good Luck, TomC

OK...here comes a "newbie" (maybe even dumb) question...What is the difference between 2-stroke oil and 4-stroke oil? I'm currently running heavy duty 30wt oil in my 6v71N on my SDM from the local NAPA. Is this a "no-no?" Should I be using something else in lue of this??

Any suggestions, as always, are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Josh

Currently, the single viscosity oil you should be using in a 2 stroke engine will have CF-2 on the label-and most likely mention that it is approved for 2 stroke Detroit Diesels.
You should only run 30 weight if the outside temp is below 32 degrees. If above you should be running straight 40 weight.
Any 2 stroke Detroit will be a 6V-53, 6-71, 6V-71, 8V-71, 6V-92, 8V-92.
Because of the 2 stroke design, the engine never relaxes between strokes like a 4 stroke, so the polymers in multiviscosity oils used with 4 strokes get essentially squashed down in a 2 stroke-making the oil only be a 15 weight oil if it is a 15w40. Straight weight oils will always maintain their viscosity since the polymers are not used in 30 and 40 weights. Good Luck, TomC

Ok...so I am running straight 30 in my coach right now, although the temps haven't gotten quite down to 32 yet. Since I'm not going to be using the coach now until spring I will wait to switch over to the 40 wt. That's good to know TomC, because the apparent dumb-ass PO from whom I bought the coach told me just the OPPOSITE! And he supposedly has been around coaches for 20+ years!!! Ggrrr.

Thanks Everyone!!

It's not that big of a deal!
30 or 40 wt, summer or winter as long as the oil is not sludging up, gunky or funky it will be fine, just avoid using multi-weight oil i.e. 5w 40 etc. though if you do use a multi-weight it will be OK your not going to spin a bearing or seize the engine it's more important to allow the oil to pump up to the vital components (oil pressure above 20) before giving the engine any throttle, than what type of oil your coating the components with. just my .02

I am at least doing one thing correctly by using Straight weight oil! Lol And it does maintain good oil pressure always. Thanks for the tips Ken!

Josh check to see if the 30WT oil you're using is CF-2 if not you're probably using gasoline motor oil. I made the newbie mistake of pouring 40wt gasoline motor oil in my 6V92 and added an oil additive. It started leaking out...!

JD -

I'll be sure to check that.. I haven't used any additives, but I still seem to be adding a little more oil than what I would like... I grew up around the trucking industry, operating DD's, but was never involved "hands-on." I know that the old Jimmy's slobber quite a bit, but mine - with a 6v-71 slobbers a lot!! Perhaps non CF-2 rated oil is the culprate... Thanks for the tip!

Straight 40 wt available here last week when I checked at both wallmart and canadian tire. Same price at both places $40 for a 20 litre pail. Not sure who packages it for them, but I am going to try to find out. This is offcourse in addition to the regular bulk dealers.

I have a slobbering 6v92 that was dumping puddles out of the airbox over flow tank every time I moved the bus, after asking friends and customers and posting the problem online I finally pulled the heads last week and today I pulled the oil pan to get the pistons out for what should be a ring job or leaking wrist pin seal, but I found 3/8" thick chunks of nylon or plastic in the pan less than an inch at the longest point and when I cleaned them up I thought they were black graphite, like a broken pillow block, after scratching at a piece I realized its yellowish white plastic or nylon. Any ideas?
The engine is a reliabilt mfg:04/2007 I bought the bus in feb 2008 and drove it about 6 slobbering miles, it left a trail of oil that is still visible today.

The turbo was an A/R .75 the DD dealer here looked up the s/n for me and that was the wrong turbo, it required an A/R .96 fortunately I already have one have, the exhaust holes, manifold and pipe all the way to the muffler is oily on both sides, I don't want to pull the pistons if the problem is something else.

You guys just amaze me -

You just 'pulled the oil pan' to 'get the pistons out'... kind of like me saying, "I just vacuumed the carpet to get the dust out.'

Gimmee a break!

My most minor problem is a life-threatening event. But you guys seem to take it all in stride. I'm envious... and wondering of I'll EVER get to that level of competence.

Probably not, but it's fun to read about.

Fear not, Nellie, once you've seen someone pull a piston out, you'll be doing it too.

Re-assembling the valve train and injectors is a little more fun, but it's just following directions, something your gender gives you a distinct advantage....

happy coaching!

Nellie,
If you happen to wander through Texas to pick up a gig in Austin, You could stop by here and help pull my 6-71 apart.
We'll rope some of the other local bus people in too and make a mini rally out of it!

Checked with my source at canadian tire and he tells me that their house brand oil is packaged for them by Shell. Whether or not the 40 cf2 is exactly the same spec as the Rotella he could not confirm.
Wallmart brand is not known to me, but we have this member that posts on this board from Alaska that buys wallmart oil in Canada and uses it in his detroit(s). That sounds to me like taking a refrigerator to the eskimo's. May be Tom will respond and enlighten us.

Hi, Joe.

We have bought and used Canadian CF-2 oils without any problems that I am aware of, and it has been less than CAN$50 for a 20 liter pail, including taxes. We're still using it.

We compared Canadian Tire and WalMart prices; they were very close, as I recall.

Also, a friend of ours got some from a US tractor supply place and he was happy with it. I don't know how much that cost.

For what it's worth.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It looks to me like part of the issue will be the kind of claims that might appear on the packaging of the oil.
