Hi Busnuts,

I'm looking for advice on an MC8. I've been lurking around here for a while but don't own a bus at this time so I have almost no experience or knowledge of buses.

I am considering buying an MC8 bus conversion and looking for advice on what to look for and what to watch out for.

I currently own a '92 Overland diesel pusher on a Spartan chassis. It has a Cummins 8.3 with an Allison transmission. I've done a lot of work on it myself so I am familiar with diesel engines and the working of an RV. I'm not at all familiar with the DD 8V71 that is in the MC8.

Are there any frame issues to look for when inspecting? What about the 8V71 any issues to look for or be aware of?

Thanks for any advice,
David

Welcome to the madness David!

One thing you want to look for as far as the frame goes is excessive rust - especially around the suspension components. As far as the DD goes, they like to slobber! So don't be alarmed if you see drops of oil falling beneath the coach!

Other than that, I will let my fellow "veteran busnutters" fill in the more detailed gaps which I have left open!! LOL

Do you have any pix to share of the 8??

Good luck with your future purchase!

Josh

My thoughts are WELCOME ABOARD to the wonderful world of BUSNUTS LOL Good luck on your adventure. I have an MCI-8 and just look and listen, questions are answered here on line. Mine is solid since it was from the south and no rust issues. Check as mentioned around the rear axle area for excessive rust and don't be afraid to ask if it can be driven over a pit so you can walk under and look at things.

Welcome. The MC8 is a great coach. The skin is stainless below the beltline. But above it is standard steel and prone to rusting. Under the skin in the front is in danger from the front running lights leaking inside. Also check the engine cradle for stress cracks. I have a 76 and it has had some supports replaced before I got it. The 8V71 will run even when it is worn out. Just doesn't run as well :-) There are real smart folks on both boards more than willing to help as you feed your addiction. Good Luck

Frank
