My air box has rust issues. Hit a pot hole the other day and it caused it to bend up and bust air bag what is the best way to fix this have a new one fabed or cut one from a parts bus. Got an estimate to do both sides (cause the other has rust to) the shop said about $2000.00. Also know where a parts bus is but not shure what they want for the parts. |

don't expect much for $2000 , there may be a lot more issues with the frame when you get in their. $2000 might cover new bags & block off plates, not likely frame rebuilding. ~N0 driving until the defects are fully inspected ...Make the informed choices, is a good start... |

First the air bag bolts to the arm and is supposed to have a reliefe (popoff valve), located on the inside of the (frame) in the air supplyline to the bag. Next the right arm on my present coach has been plated an reinforced,due to rust? The tags on both my MCI an TMC are rated at 6,000lbs max. If it were me I would, check the mount area, plate it, if necessary an either get used arm (may be just as weak) or plate yours. |

Tag axle is not an air beam, it is just a hollow structure. For an experienced body shop, rebuilding the tag is a standard job. They actually lament MCI changing to a different style of tag axle, those like the MC7/8/9 kept many workers busy full time... Get both sides done, then you may forget about it for a while. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Ok thanks. I though it had been plated but the arm is shot so I going to replace it thanks for the input I though new would be better than old. But you think 2000 is not going to be a good estimate probably more that arm that comes down to the bag seems to be what is bad. |

As BW said the arms are simply hollow structures. I replaced my tag air bags for about 160 dollars for parts alone from MCI. I would consider a welding shop to refab your arms for you. I would think I'd be able to get it done for 2000 quite easily. |

I had the same thing happen on our MC-8. I removed the wheel, air bag and shock. I moved the airbag frame back into place, plated and welded, then re-installed the airbag, shock and wheel. I inspected the other side, saw some rust through on the ntop and went ahead and plated that side. Jack (Message edited by JackConrad on November 12, 2009) |
