If a '57 4104 has the original bathroom intact, what size is the black tank and is it worth salvaging/using?

Hey Keith
the existing tank is probalbly not big enough for a conversion.
I have a 135 gal tank on mine for the blk and gray water.
Hop this helps

One tank works just as well as two for grey or black, but remember that the RULE for black tanks must be followed with a combination.

FILL the BLACK tank at least 3/4 full before dumping. This helps carry the non decomposed waste out.

Its better to dump after a trip, as this will help slosh everything to bits .

IF you use a hose / pressure regulator to feed the fresh water to the coach , and sit in campgrounds a lot ,, its easy to have a GREY Bypass , so you can directly dump the grey all the time , and not fill the black tank as often.

Hmm... If you are only using one black/grey tank, how about a second drain valve about 3/4 of the way up the tank? This could be the one you leave hooked up when parked in a place with sewer. This would insure that the tank got to the 3/4 mark but would still allow long term camping without having to worry about dumping.

To prevent floaters, do what they do on septic tanks: Instead of a threaded fitting on the tank wall, make the fitting a pass-through bulkhead sleeve with a pipe that extends into the tank a few inches then has a 90-degree elbow pointing down with a short nipple that dips down into the water Lets you drain off liquid without skimming any floating material, whatever it might be.

The easiest system is to have a setup in which the grey can constantly be hooked up to a drain while at a campsite , and you "need " to do 31 loads of laundry .

This is done with a valve setup, that allows you to direct the water to go overboard , or to the black tank.

To find reference for this and about a hundred pages of good RV info check oit this website.

Dont forget the vent pipe is the most important in the system , if your nose works at all!
