Nothing to do with Thanksgiving - being a bachelor it just occurred to me that this is going on today.

I just want to thank everyone on here who has been so patient and helpful to me as I have tried to figure out what to do about buying something for my band to travel in. I am now almost certain that I am not suited to owning a bus right now. The arithmetic doesn't work. Further, I have a law practice and for the past four and a half years I've been a single parent (or more accurately, permanent legal guardian) of my now five year old nephew. I am also a mechanical illiterate. I just don't have the money, the time, or the expertise to go this route right now.

But since this is still theoretically a possibility and ultimately a probability, does this mean that I can still be a member? This stuff is second nature to most of you but it's been a huge learning experience for me and I still have much to learn.

I saw a fairly new shuttle-type bus that was used as an office - has a generator, two air conditioners, electric outlets, motor home type door, good lighting - that I may get. Just put a small lounge in front, bunks in the middle, storage in back and I'm in business. Not the comfort of a 40 footer, but I'm from the generation that can sleep in a floorboard and shave in a hubcap so this is relative luxury. Haven't driven it yet but surely it rides better than a motor home, which I certainly want to stay away from.

Now, the last word on Vern's bus. I talked to Tom T.'s driver who was with him when T. had that bus and in fact picked up T.'s Eagle. Wonderful man who now drives for Taylor Swift. He said that particularly in those days T never bought anything. Other people took care of this. His understanding as well was that T bought the Buffalo new although this was prior to his going to work for him. He added a wrinkle: Dixie used a bus bought from Bobby Bare, not the 4905 at issue. He also mentioned that the bus had chronic transmission problems so they kept a spare on hand. It's not out of the question that Vern at some point did put a standard shift trans in it. Who knows. But this fellow did otherwise speak well of the bus. Said it drove, ran and rode great. And he confirmed as well that T sold the bus to Vern.

So, the Court is prepared to rule: The Court finds that while all witnesses appear to be credible, the evidence preponderates in favor of the subject bus being bought new by one Tom T. Hall and thereafter sold to Vern Gosdin.

Now, I've hushed about it. The lawyer who is in charge of Vern's estate won't return my calls, the bus hasn't be started for over a year and I don't have any more time to devote to this.

BTW, for the person who mentioned this, we're playing the aforementioned Florida bluegrass festival in October.

Happy Thanksgiving all. My ward is in KY so I'll take this opportunity to get to the office and see how far I am behind.

Thanks again.

I'm a-thanking you. This is a good bunch.

And by the way, for the person who mentioned the "Alison's Band" song in a thread below, I played a rough mix of it for her after recording it - I wasn't going to release it if she objected. She was a great sport about it. Buddy Cannon and I wrote that in thirty minutes and it changed my life. I'd have had more time for this 20 years ago but I don't think I'd have appreciated it as much.

Strange knowing thousands of people by their first names, but 30 years in the business does this. And I'd have never seen hardly any of these people again but for that song - that led to a record deal (on the same label as Alison) - that led to the touring and such.

Not being one who looks back, I didn't realize how much I'd missed it. Or I should say, them.

Charlie, you can be a mechanical illiterate and still own a bus silly! You just hire others to maintain it.

Charlie,

I've owned a couple former handicap shuttlebuses. I use them for my construction business and I love 'em. Some are better than others, but I've been happiest with my Goshen 25 passenger, Ford E-SuperDuty (450) dually with the 7.3 PowerStroke TurboDiesel. It has a 36" rear and a big 42" side door (where the wheelchair lift was) for loading and unloading. The seats are bolted in with only four bolts (includes seatbelts), and are mounted to rails, so you can move them for & aft, or do club seating. There's room under the frame for small holding tanks too. The only issue I've had with the Fords is the E4OD auto tranny. They just can't seem to go over 170,000 miles without a rebuild.
Best part? You can buy 'em (used) cheap...and I mean cheap!! Aluminum and/or fiberglass(?) bodies hold their looks too. This one I have now was only $3000, and had less than 130,000 miles on it. Been a great truck, and drives like a normal van (w/dually). Had a single tire rear axle once that did sway a bit more in the wind.

Good luck and be sure to stick around...

Thanks fof the head's up on the trans.

Of course I'm aware that I can hire people to work on a bus. They don't come cheap around here, however. And I've settled in my own head that I have to at least break even in this music stuff; otherwise, I may be declared certifiably insane. Which I probably am anyway but if so I come by it honest and think I hide it well.

I clicked on the link above thinking it would have something to do with working on buses. A bit embarassing except for this. The guitar is a replica of the guitar Carter Stanley played; it was given to me by the children of Carter Stanley. I did some legal work for them and him being my idol and all I couldn't charge them. Tom T. always called him the "appalachian savant." Ralph has gottn a lot of attention in music circles in the past few yars, but let us not forget that "Man Of Constant Sorrow" was Carter's arrangemment.

If you think I'm dropping names with T and Carter and Ralph, I suggest that most would not know who I'm talking about. If you do, then so much the better.

Charlie,

I was informed last night that Little Roy has downsized from a big bus to a converted shuttle bus for the new act to travel in. You should definitely call him and pick his brain.

I'd like to thank Bob publicly, sort of, for volunteering to make a considerable drive and inspect the Vern bus for me. We had planned to do this just prior to the bus being sold. Obvious in this post is the notion that haven't completely given up on owning a bus.

To digress: is there a fundamental difference between an 8v71 and a 6v92?

Thanks.

Charlie,
I'm sure some of the guys who really know there stuff will give you some real "take it to the bank" knowledge, but I can tell you a little that I have learned from trucking with Detroits. The V-71 series is the earliest of them (71 cubic inches displacement per cylinder). They were mostly naturally aspirated (not turbo) although they came with turbos also. Detroit came out with the 92 series in the mid 70's I think, with the 6 V 92 about the same displacement as the 8 V 71. They were mostly turbocharged and made more horsepower/weight ratio and somewhat better fuel mileage I believe. That said, all these come in all configurations and horsepower levels. I had a 8 v 71 N with white tag 75 injectors and high speed gears on the roots blower that would run circles around any 350 on the road.
There are a lot of both on the road, so I am sure the answers will come hot and heavy! lol
Good luck in your search,
John
