Any comments, advise, websites, favorite spots, etc regarding parking the bus off the beaten track. We are not much for organized campsites. We are going to take a "shake-down" cruise to AZ. & NM in a few weeks. Thanks. Cara |

There is an overflow camping area at Navajo National Monument. The spaces are dirt and they are on the edge of a ridge with a gorgeous view. This is west of Kayenta AZ. |

You are welcome to stay at my place on your way thru. Or, there is a great little state park on the east side of Gallup, tucked up among the Red Rocks. Either way, stop by and see me. www.ranchkitchen.com John Marbury Note to Ian: Sorry, I forgot again but it has been awhile! |

The Bureau of Land Management has hundreds of neat and primitive places you can stay for 14 days (for free). I am sitting in one in Az. as I type this on my lap top tied into a cell phone. If you add in the Forest Service, Corps of Engineers, and State land the neat places add up into the thousands. The only problem is you will have a tough time getting people to fess up about their favorite places. Posting it on a bulletin board is a good way to lose your 'favorite' sites. I criss-cross the US at least once each year and its getting harder and harder to find those remote and beautiful out of the way places. Good Luck! jc |

Thank you everyone, and yes John we are thinking of Red Rock area. Thanks for the invite. Great ideas. We live on a boat and have travelled for many years via the water, so I do understand not broadcasting your favorite places. We are thinking of getting a lap-top and communication paraphanalia. Anything worked particularly (inexpensive) well for anyone? Thanks again, Cara |

If you are planning a low cost Internet system, cell phone is your best bet. I have had reasonably good luck with a Verizon plan and a Motorola Timeport with the data cable & software. But if you will be in remote places, finding a cell signal may be hard enough, let alone finding a digital cell signal. Cell phones are very slow, but for infrequent e-mail usage and checking the occasional text-based BB, they work fine. Scott |

Pick up Don Wrights guide to FREE camping. Lists about 2,500 free places. A lot of them have size limitations but a lot are great. O'l Eagle Eye |

I use a laptop amd motorola startac phones. I have the Verizon Americas Choice family plan so Vicki (better half) and I both have our own phones and can contact each other when separated (shopping, hiking, etc) With unlimited nights and weekends I am able to get on the net pretty much anywhere and surf to my hearts content, albeit 14.4k (equates to about 18-20k on a land line). If you care to visit Quartzite, check out Plamosa road (5 miles north of Quartzite turn East and go about 3 miles towards Bouse Az.) Good view and good cell service. |
