I have a 6kw diesel generator. The experts (???)say i have to expell 20,000 btu of heat from the cooling system. Could I use a school bus heater that puts out 50,000 btu as a radiator to cool it.The heater has 1" inlet and outlet. I thought an expansion tank teed into the return line would be needed. Has any one tryed this or do you think it will work. |

Yeah, I did that almost. I used an old personnel heater from a telephone company work trailer. Nothing but a heater core, with a pretty powerful squirrel cage 110v blower. I was not only cooling the engine, but since it was a marine genset, I was cooling the exhaust manifold too. From what you mention, I would think you would have no problem, but you will have to get enough air across it to carry off the heat of course. |

Sounds good to me. If anything, your heater core now radiator may be too big if it is supposed to heat 50K and all you need is 20K of cooling. Smaller fan may work great. Go for it. Henry |

I do this with a 7k. Built a manifold with 24V, 3/4" valves. Shut down the webasto. bring genset online. I monitor coolent temp inside with an infrared detector. I turn on enough fans to keep coolent <140 degrees. genset radiator is completely blocked. radiator temp for above circumstances will be 170 to 180 degrees. Genset has a high temp shut down circuit. There are many, many veriables here and this setup requires constant attention. 15 degree weather is not abnormal and this system has been working for four years w/o trbl. |
