Hi to All This is my first post on this site. Since I can't bear to get rid of the "Brill O Pad" (yes John Roan it is still on there) it is time to swap out the Hall-Scott gas for something newer and more powerful. Any suggestions? I have a 10 spd OD Road Ranger to back it up. John, do you still have a remote manual shifter available? Thanks in advance for your input. Jim |

Welcome to the site; great guys and gals on here with lots of helpful information.Yes, I still have the remote shifter. Glad to hear you still have the coach. Many memories of it. Any pics. to share with everyone? I think Crawford Coach in McCoysville, Penna may still have a Brill or two available, possibly, for parts. He even had a diesel model at one time; a 50's model. It didn't look near as nice as yours. Brill had switched to alum siding and went to single multi leaf springs. Two of the easiest?? but not the only possibilities would be either a pancake Detroit 6-71 or a Cummins pancake diesel. I think both were used at one time or another in Crowns. Someone on here probably can give you some tips on locating either. Of course, both of these would go in location of original engine. (more or less). I know the Detroit used an oil pan angle adapter and special pan. I think engine rested at 15 degrees so oil could still drain to pan. Someone here, I believe had some for sale, but it was quite some time ago. |

Jim - Welcome to the madness! Either Crown or Gillig skoolies used "pancake" inline sixes, both Detroit & Cummins, and there are still a lot of them in service. Far less expensive to buy a whole bus right out of service, drive it home, and use what you can. Do a Google or Craigslist search and you'll see what pops up. Regarding the 10-spd, both coach builders offered them as options, so look for a coach so equipped and you're shift linkage problems are partially solved. CA is, IIRC, requiring school districts that use certain air qualilty funds for purchasing new buses to have the old ones CRUSHED, w/o any opportunity to rob parts ahead of time. Sad, really. There was a fellow at one of the early Bus Conversions Magazine conventions in Laughlin, NV that had a nice Brill w/ a Cummins/RoadRanger powertrain - quite the hot rod! Good Luck on your project, and again, welcome to the madness! FWIW & HTH. . .

FF- I think he'd be hard pressed to put a V-8 under the floor. Since 2 stroke Detroit mechanics are getting fewer and further apart, I would only recommend using the Cummins NTC engine (855cu in or 14 liter). It will be a hot rod even at a modest 350hp. Good Luck, TomC |

Thanks for the info guys. The DD 6-71 and the Cummins 855's and older versions were the only ones that I was aware of. There was a Brill in the midwest that had the Detroit, but it hung way low to the ground. What I was really hoping for was some newer technology. If I find a good 855 that would do. Something like Mr. Breeze found would be great! |

Any 4 stroke engine should only use maybe as much as 2-3 quarts of oil in the 12,000 mile oil change interval. If you're burning a quart in 1,000 miles, it's time for overhaul-that engine is worn out. Good Luck, TomC |
