What is the advantage or disadvantage of a torque converter over a flex plate

knowing as little as i do about auto transmissions i9m going tpo take a chance and tell you that the flex plate is generally the componant that connects the trans to the fly wheel the torque converter is the means by witch the engine transmitts power to the wheels through the transmission without the need for a clutch so i think you need to find out what the person who gave you the info that led you to the question just what he or she was trying to tell you wopps in proof reading the message i have made a mistake the flexplate connects the converter to the flywheel the converter is then connected to the trans

The flexplate is used to connect the crankshaft to the torque converter. The flexplate is in place of the flywheel and in most cases has the starter ring gear attached to it.

Peter is correct A flywheel has a machined surface and a lot of mass for momentum. A flex plate is thin and light, let the convertor handle the momentum. The starter ring gear is the only similar part.
