One of the draw backs of living in the North woods of Michigan is access to some goods and services. Usually you just travel extra time for your needs. This on'e a little harder, so I am looking to see if anyone know's of, is one, knows some one who know's an experincened Bus Mech./ Tech. Specifically GM Bus in the 1960's era.
Specifically the installation of a power steering kit on a 1960 4104, is the first project.I purchased a kit from NIMCO last fall, that is still sitting in a box on my shelf( big plans!) If we could find someone who has done one, I would be very confident they could do any of the other things I would like completed. As much as I don't want to sell, I know the enevitable, but have certain expectaions on the condition I would like the unit to be in.
So if anyone knows someone they could hook me up with, I would appreciate it. Travel and lodging can be arranged, lots of room for bus parking, free scenery, lots of deer to look at. Lots of local fishing!
40X60 heated shop, air, electric, welders, most tools you would require( we all kno how that goes)

Hello David, I would not consider Myself an experienced GM bus Technician but I will submit my resume for your consideration in case a bus tech is unavailable. here is my website www.exoticautomotiveservices.com I would not attempt a procedure without absolute confidence that the end result will be a job well done. besides I would not care to tarnish the beginnings of my image here. read this thread a bit down on the lists you may find it amusing.....Met a 2 stroke mechanic today.....posted on this date 3-08-10 4:27 pm.......Dale I will say again that if the bus guy is found I would not be disappointed. I offer of myself only if all else fails nothing more. My best regards JM

On my 4104, we used pipe run under the body in the ribs and used short hoses to connect at either end. Make sure you add positive caster to the front axle to help eliminate wander. BTW, the 4104 box works the opposite direction of the 4106 and 4905's. You also would benefit from the 1 to 1 steering gears in the angle box at the bottom of steering column.

Sounds like you think like an engineer John those are logical ( for those with a clue ) suggestions, I have seen the work of those that call themselves skilled perform this with two 30+" of hose, on an assisted box that would still have the same lock to lock ratios, and a bus that wanders like a Beagle. Of course I am talking about observations of equivalent technical aptitude since my line of work has mostly been in exotic auto-mobiles. PS no offence to beagle owners out there, but they are wanderers

John, It sounds like you have already completed the procees on yours? I hope it steer's like a dream? I also planned on using the hoses currently running front to aft for the Power Assist Unit. I purchased every thing else from NIMCO.
I also plan on using this Proceess:Sheppard Steering GM Coaches Procedure Guide for installing the Sheppard steering system on PD4104. Includes parts information and maintenance section on the Sheppard steering gear and Vickers pump.
Those were my intentions till some sucker zapped 68lbs of body weight and a bunch of strength. Can't say to much about the energy, I have always been a little lazy. AHHH but to be laying out under the bus about now, know what I mean? Gotta keep the couch covered, never no when a nap on the couch might be in order, to figure things out!

Have a good one!

Sir, Make SURE the Sheppard steering box that you bought from Nimco will work on your PD-4104.
The bevel gear at the bottom of the steering mast on the PD-4104 is different than on the later GMC intercity coaches.
And like a previous post stated when you turn left the bus will go to the right.

If your 4104 had the factory power assist ram system then you have nice pipes run through the channel in the ceiling of the bays all the way to the back. A bus that originally was manual only won't have built in piping.

George: WANDER LIKE A BEAGLE: HAHAHAHAHA! Only someone who has owned both a beagle and a worn sloppy old bus can propely appreciate the accuracy of that one! Well Done.

(Cept my beagle didn't take off towards the oncoming semi on a 20 foot wide 2 lane!)
