I am on the road having an issue throwing fan belts. I have a 1967 MCI 5a with an 8v71 with a spring loaded pulley which is making a gravely noise. I do not think it is the bearings as the seem good and everything seems to rotate quietly with belt off. I will see if I can post a photo of the pulley it does not seem to be separating evenly while the belt is spinning which I believe it should. I am not familiar with this type of pulley system so any advice would be appreciated. I am currently at a rest area west of FT Stockton,Texas |

Jaime, Is the belt tight enough to keep the belt from walking out of the pulley? On my 67 mci 5a there is two adjusting bolts and nuts that lifts the gearbox up or down to adj. the belt. If there is nothing loose to cause movement, I think I would tighten the belt and see what happens. HTH Glen Rice |

Thank you Glen for the reply I have tightened the belt with the below instructions and even a little tighter ¼ inch.

Jaime, The fit of the pulley may be hanging and causing a loose/tight situation as the pulley turns. I would remove the belt and then spray some WD-40 on the fit and then work it in and out with light taps of a hammer (dead blow or regular with a piece of wood to cushion the blows). Work it until it moves evenly and stays straight. Then take some alcohol or other solvent and clean off the pulley so that the belt will grip. Alternately you could take it apart and clean it up too but probably not the best place to do that unless you have to. Hope that helps. - Greg (Message edited by gregeagle20 on May 19, 2010) |

Penetration-cleaning & then lubrication liquids...in that order Greg, I agree with you except for 2 items. The seems to be no water to displace so the Missile skin dew repellent (wd-40) isn't called for. CRC 3-36 is a better product but still might not have the deepest penetration properties available. See the post on Mouse Milk/PB Blaster lower down on the front page. If the problem seems to be associated with grease hardening & dirt impaction as opposed to rust, try carb cleaner or starting fluid , which is nothing but Either, the worlds best de-greaser south of liquid Freon. Ventilation & common sense around any of the above is in order. Or at least that's my SOP FWIW |

"why must we keep bringing up mouse milk"... I don't know George, when I drink it, it stays down for me, whose this "we" you speak of? Maybe it's your mix or the monkey chow, didja ever give them any thought? Marvi's Meds.....tremors?... SO Cal wants to get rid of them, can you stand of the roof of a moving Bus with a shovel? Just an idea..... |

Jamie, glad that it seems to be working. When you get home, I would get a new belt. Once a belt has turned over (would guess yours did), the outer cords are damaged a bit and it will be prone to turn over again. I would keep this belt as an emergency belt. Sounds like the sheave half was bound up on the shaft. Jim |

I truly apologize for ever mentioning mm and have been sorry ever since!! A worn pulley bearing will make a grinding sound under load and not make it when unloaded. |
