I am in the process of digesting Da Book for my latest toy. Our new (1967) boat has a 1943 Grey Marine DD 6-71. Happily it came with a students maint book that is far more fun to read than the usuall DD tome. Some interesting things so far. Oil changes at 50 hours. Decomission by pulling side inspection plates & squirting in fogging oil thru intake ports. This might work in a coach. The most interesting is the method of getting started in "below freezing". They mounted a combustion chamber in one of the center air box covers that had an igniter, and a small hand pump. The hand pump would supply presurized diesel fuel to a small spray nozle & pushing the button would ignite the oil. The unit vented into the cylinders , so the exhaust would help heat the air charge , and unburned fuel would richen up the mix. With no block heaters , and a great reluctance to use ether , I guess this was the "approved" cold weather starting method. The older books are much more informative as they were training books , not just reference books for already skilled wrenches. They list 235 Hp at 2100 as max , interesting , the throttle has 2 spring positions "normal" and "Battle". Normal restricted the engine to 2000 , Battle got the full 2100. Makes you wonder about the folks that "Cruise " at 2400. FAST FRED |

Fast Fred; According to the parts book; GM Diesel 6 SP 35 Rev.8-59 It's part # 5170792 - Air Heater Assy. Actualy a number of farm tractors use a varification of this type of heater today. New Holland Fiat {old Ford Tractor } has a design which I believe could be incoraporated into a detroit very easily and cheaply into a detroit intake. Oh Yes; also in the same parts book is; part # 5193474 Cold Weather Staeting Aid Kit ( that's a jell capsule ether starting induction ) Know You don't like ether, but it was factory installed !! Don't look like it includes the wire always tied on to the knob to dig out the old gel capsule that was left from the last time ) Jose, Just a Old, dumb, diesel mechanic |

Great stuff Jose, the other interesting from the old DD book is they did not seem to have CCA or other ratings for starting batteries. Their recomendation was for a starting battery of 150A at the 20 hour rate. Not very big by our standards today , but with that heater working, I guess cold cranking was not contemplated. FAST FRED |
