What about this idea.....
We go on a lot of family trips, some with as many as 15 people. I was thinking of converting the forward luggage hold into a room for the kids with just a simple door to access it from the main level. Cutting a hole in the plywood wouldn't hurt anything would it? That particular bay is heated and cooled. If I wired a tv and radio they would be happy when we are camping. And so would we. The only problem I see is the controversy that will arrise when rolling down the road. They will want to go down when moving. We will see how it goes. Does this plan sound totally nuts?

I was at i44bus a couple months a go and they had a Eagle 01 that had that same idea.

They has also has a 45 foot Eagle 15 that had a driver lounge in the front area. It had is own out side door and they had bed and chair phone up to driver and a TV. They used these on long cross country trips when they needed more then one drivers.

You would have to trust the other driver in this setup. I know is hard enough in a sleeper in the semi to sleep when someone else is driving and I am related to the other driver most of the time. Everything is boosted when you can't see what is happening.

My brother-in-law did this. Put a hatch inside the bench seat of the kithen table. Had a TV on a wall mount stand as high as he could get it. Grand kids loved it.

I saw a 4107 with the center bay made into a grandkids room; entered thru a hatch in the floor. Mexican Dina's in service have sleeper compartments in the forward bay for a 2nd driver or the driver's ---------!

I've had this thought too, and I still laughed when I read your post. I thought it was a good idea, as long as the doors don't come flying open and you don't plan on running over anything larger than a Civic. Who's to say you couldn't put a small sliding window down there, too?

I would want emergency escape weather driving down the road or sleeping there. This would mean some type of inside release on the bay doors, which would mean no unsupervized young kids that might open a door when moving. Also emergency lighting. Could be as simple a flashlight.

Another concern would be ventilation. A bay with a trap door on top would be a 'confined space' and danger of CO2 buildup.

As for the escape, why not just throw a box with a thin bit of automotive glass, so that you can't really "tinker" with it, but in an emergency it can still be broken.

Sorta like the escape handles on the New Flyers, eh Henry eh?
