IN my continued quest - I have questions about a bus with a cummins 555 - but have been unable to find much info on their use in 1960 vintage buses...the 30ft flexible newlook on BNO looks interesting...though I know it has been listed for a long time. Any thought? Thanks in advance.

The 555 Cummins was a English Cummins V-8 Diesel. They were not very popular because they didn't stand up well. Parts are getting hard to find. You might consider the purchase with a re-power in mind Some of the newer smaller 6 cylinder Cummins and Cat's with Air Charge cooling would make a good replacement.

The 555 Cummins was not a good engine. There were often referred to as a throw away engine. Were lucky to go 100,000 miles.

Thanks. Makes sense seeing that I could find so little about that engine.

I had 2 555's . One ran find . The other had a 2 piece crank . The connection of the two pieces was a little rough, actually I don't think it was original eguipment. Have heard they have reputation of turning 1 piece cranks into 2 pieces. I would pass it by.

Many medium duty trucks were equipped with the triple nickle such as concrete and fire trucks. Major drawbacks include a sometimes weak crank shaft, low horse power (the turbo model was only 240 HP) and high RPM (3000+- shift point). Parts are getting expensive. You can get get the same HP out of the Cummins pickup size 5.9L (or is it 5.8?) with half the weight. If you really want to kick some butt, drop in the new Ford powerstroke, it is half the weight and has 100+ more HP.
