Help me NOT look stupid while shopping for my first shell. Is "Prevost" pronounced phonetically, or is it "Pray-voh?"

Depends on where you're at. I've heard it pronounced both "Preee-vohst" (rhymes with "ghost") and "Pray-voh" over my years in the industry. I don't think it really matters - except for a few "snobs", most folk in the bus business will know what you're talking about.

Others, including you, may end up calling it a lot worse..Just kiddin'.

"Preee-vohst" is most common.

I thought that "pree-voh" or "pray-voh" was just short for "pree-vohst". Sort of like people say "porsh" instead of "por-sha" or "flex" instead of "flex-i-bul" etc. . . So is Dina "dee-na" or "dine-ah"???

No one is in the kitchen with Deenuh, if you get my drift....

The word SNOB was used above,
when I 1st got involved in "bussin" in 1965,
SNOBS were those who drove anything newer than a 4104
(the "S" on my FMCA#-842 indicates I am one now as well, since I pilot a 4106!) :(

Hey there....Palmer....it is nice to see that you are an old time FMCA'er....We have #571 on our eagle....I joined when schoolies, city buses and postal sorting buses and library transits were definitely in vogue...I t was made up of families who wanted to travel ( taking all their kids along) and not having much money. It was way before the manufactured coaches ever thought about being built...we went to Greenville,Ohio; Boling Green, Ky; and Glenwood,Mn for conventions of the FMCA...Richter and Ken scott were leaders at that time....back then it was pure D fun. Now, it is more $$$$$.

Dave
you hit all the nails square on the button!

I remember pullin into Greenville and Dad getting his "plates", there were so many buses and buspeople we couldn't believe it!
Saw my 1st Clark Cortez there and 40 yrs later I still think they are one of the best ever made.

My favorite was DuQuoin,
aside from Herb Shriner's performance,
it was as laconic as bussin gets and that town turned out like we were ALL long lost family.
(When he told the joke about the fat girl in his town that wore a hammock and 2 beach umbrellas for a bikini, he put the whole crowd on the grass laughin til they cried).

Man back then as a kid I had the HOTS for one of those old Postal Highway Express rigs,
the Crown guys like to brag about reliability and being overbuilt, but them PHE's were like Brinks trucks,
built to haul heavy and hammer down with about a dozen men standing.

Pops old turquoise Studebaker schoolie took us to most of the early "bus meets",
Glenwood was where he "unveiled" his "new" Flx with the straight 8 Buick.

Back then we used to stuff ourselves with peanutbutter and jelly or catsup sanwiches,
just so we could keep rollin to the next destination which was usually a national historic site of one sort or another.
How many of us here have been to John Chapmans birthplace?
or even know who he is anymore?

One of the major reasons I bought our 4106
is that I still love driving the highways vs the freeways and I long for the days when that Studie traveled coast to coast on them.

Buy a '60's bus and live in the 60's as best you can....
times a wastin!

Hey Guys,
Yes I remember way down in Bowling Green, the stock car races and the arcade atmosphere. It was way cool for us TAT. (TAT?)
Better yet, being from MN I enjoyed Glenwood & marvelled at the "new 4wd Scout". Wow, what a neat machine. The local International dealer loaned a group of them to the group & we drove one up that steep hill there.
That was back in the "AeroCoach" days. Dad moved up to a 4104 a few years later after I left.(I still have an 04 today!) But I really remeber about 48 states in that old Aerocoach. Then there was Burlington, VT. Anaheim, CA, Traverse City, MI. Enjoyed all of those as a kid.....and could double clutch quite well by age 13.......Joe F908s

Hey Joe
Do you remember a family from Texas that had an ACF Brill, they had lotza kids and one was a tall gal about your age.
Funny how the memory of that Brill, shot to the top of my head when I read your post, haven't thought about it in years, it was the 1st Brill I ever saw I thought it was an AERO when I first saw it.
How about Don Midlinger or Don Biessel, they were old "Gophers" bussin back in the "stone-age"...?
About all I can recal now from the Glenwood meet was learning that in a state that already HAD 10,000 lakes, they HAD to dig the one in Glenwood by hand!!...I also seem to recall that the laborers were paid a dollar & a pint of whiskey a day for their efforts.

BTW
The John Chapman mentioned above was of course
Johnny Appleseed..... for anyone who didn't know already.

OAE,
Oh yeh! Very interesting. Sure do remember the nice family from Texas. Very friendly. Do you remember the kids came there with a box full of Texas Horny Toads and shared them with other kids. We sure thought they were cool (the horny toads AND the long legged girl!)
Do remember well Don Biessel and family. Especially the family. All cute girls!! They moved to Virginia from MN shortly after Glenwood. We visited them in VA & they visited us in Mpls, etc. Also Delavan, WI & Burlinton, VT at the big summer bus meets.
There are so many others (most pictured in their bus)I have vivid memories of as a kid as it was a big part of growing up and good summer fun. The "Gophers" are actually the Minnesota Pioneers group I think. My folks are charter members and we had many regular bus meets. As I mentioned people are surprised and pleased to hear our family (& many others with busses) travelled most of 48 states in these old busses over the growing years. Of course we saw "everything" there was to see. It is fun for me to backtrack today those years in the "same old bus" I now have.
What a kick this internet thing is!! Joe F908

Thanks Joe this was a fun thread to follow, it got WAY off topic, but it was informative and fun.
It is exactly what bussin is all about, Bus people sharing experience and emotions.
Thanks again Ian!

OAE!
Good it got off course & got us at the bottom of the post!! So others won't see how nuts we are.... You gotta be a real busnut to remember that Brill!! BTW, I thought when those Texans showed up to Glenwood in it, that my oh my, this is what FIRST CLASS bussin must be about. (my Dad dug the Brill). I thought about it today and their name came to me. It was the Pinson Family, from Lubbock, TX. That girl told me all about it!
Sure enjoyed that Horny Toad she gave me. Big deal for a twelve or so year old Boy. Let's see what year was that anyway?...........
RJ probably has the 60s records on FMCA to cross reference!!! How about it RJ??
Here's another one for you since you spoke about your old FLX. Do you remember the VanGura family from Pennsylvania?? Mr.Vangura converted the most Beautiful FLX (yellow color). Was like a CustomCoach Conversion with a big 530 cu.inch Ford Industrial Engine & automatic transmission. Had those way too cool Ford Thunderbird taillites. Remember, we are talking the 60s here. Those tail lamps were long rectangular and would flash three times to three bulbs. I am sure you would remember those lamps. Anyway, our busnut friends the SteMaries from Hudson, WI bought the rig @ Traverse City & next year or so we all travelled west to the Anaheim FMCA rally
BTW I know of a similar FLX sitting for sale here in my area. Maybe.....No way, I already have two busses, one too many.....Joe

meanwhile...
in the middle of the stinking hot desert, some bozo works on his '06.
He spends the entire day
removing a window & replacing it with sheet alum., drilling, measuring & insulating.

And in between he keeps trying to remember the box of toads.....
to no avail.

He remember the tiny lizards from fairey stone park...

he remembers the box turtle in Black River Falls...

and the bull frogs in Valpariso

and the salamanders in Arkysaw.

but no dam box of horny toads!!

SO now I am thinkin
maybe you made up the toads part,
just to make it look like your memory is in better shape than mine...
now what were we talkin about?? :(

AH Ha..!!
I do recall that FLX tho!!!!!
He had that Ford motor painted blue & the engineroom (one reason to LOVE FLX's is that they have a bonafide ENGINEROOM)was like looking at a museum display.
Funny thing about that guy and his pride in his coach....he set THE standard for improving on the compromises of mass production that stands in my mind today.
There was just no way of making a single improvement to the back end of that bus, the whole thing was a work of art that produced inspiration in others, horspower and miles of smiles.....and thats real bussin' :)

OAE,

Great!! Sure got you thinking there..
I recall your busnut family from the good old days in the 60s. We sure had great times growing up this way and really saw & learned of the world thru the windshield of an old bus and the person, places & things we encountered along the way. There was no TV on those vacations & was not missed!! Plenty of busnut friends to entertain us all. My Dad said your Dad sponsered the one of the very first busmeets the MN Pioneer bus group had & remember it all quite well. I remember many subsequent meets in the years ahead!!
I remember Neal Armstrong setting foot on the moon while we were at some rally, maybe Anaheim FMCA or ??? OUTSTANDING!!!! JOE

Chris.....
I have been lurking around this wall for about a year now.
One of the very first things I learned about Ian's wall was that I ALWAYS came away with MORE than bargained for..!!

It is one of the things that makes this place special.

OAEP,

Nice compliment! Thank you!!

Chris,

Prevost is manufactured in Quebec, the Province of Canada in which French is the 'first language'. "Pray-voh" is the French-Canadian pronounciation (and you have to 'roll' the 'r' as only French-Canadians can). It follows the same articulation as "precis" with an acute accent (accent ague) over the 'e'.

The accepted anglicized verbalization or voicing is "pree-voh".

Regards,

Ian Giffin

Your welcome,
but I assure you, the pleasure is ALL mine!
Here comes yet another 90degree turn, smack dab in the middle of a thread.....

.....pronunciation.....it can cost you if you don't understand the local traditions...

This brung to mind the story of the traveling salesman & the hitchhiker in the middle of Texas.

The salesman had stopped to pick up the young man seemingly stranded on a hot lonely state highway.

As they rode along the young man mentioned that he had a terrible thirst
and that HE sure could use a cold drink.

About the time he got the words out of his mouth
they passed a sign that said...

MEXIA 10 miles

The kid said, "only 10 miles to meX-e-ah"!

the salesman said, "it's pronounced ma-heya".

The kid disagreed and bet the salesman a cold drink
that the person serving the drinks would say
MEX-ia,
and the salesman, smelling a sure thing took the bet...

Ten minutes later they pulled into the parking lot
of an ice cream stand....

*(Note, if you are still standing in the middle of the street scratchin your noggin, please step onto the curb, a bus with it's high beams on has just rounded the corner and is headed straight for you)

The kid and the salesman both order their cold drinks
and then the kid sez to the man behind the window...

"Mister me and this guy have a bet,
the loser has to pay for both drinks....
How do you pronounce the name of this place...?"

(run fast!!)

...and the man behind the window said.....
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"DAIRY QUEEN....whose payin"
.
.
.
.
(sorry, but I warned you ahead of time,
hope you made it to the curb!)

Now I don't know about the rest of you off-camber busnuts,
but I like the classic old stuff....
and that gag is at least 90yrs old.

OAE,
I'll save the built by Pullman Company FLX story for later.
Want to say thanks for sharing the info and telling me about your ailing Mother. If you could tell her I know she would be pleased to know about our friendly meetings here, common busnut interests, and the fact our families go back together in the busnut community almost 50 years!!!
She would enjoy hearing of what we could share and learned, but I am sure could tell us alot more about those many years past as I have from my folks.
I called my folks today and they were aware she was not well as Dad saw Warren at the Pioneers Busmeet in MN last September. He arrived by car to see many old friends unfortunately without your Mom. We wish you well. Joe

BTW, will catch the FLX story after the weekend. Heading out tomorrow on the bike for the Harley Weekend in Laughlin
