I just installed my genset.

It is a 3500 watt kohler and i was wondering what everyone used for gallonage?

I was thinking too big and the gas would be in there too long and get stale and too small would have me filling it up every couple of miles.

I use the gen mostly on the road so i was thinking about 16 gallons.

my other camper fed from the main tank so i never knew what it used for fuel.

Not sure what my fuel consumption is for this genset cause i have not used it yet.

I can get the tank at a local boat supply with built in float style gauge and screw on cap in poly for around 90 bucks.

thanks for your input

A really simple method is to use a couple of outboard tanks. 6 gal each doesnt last too long , but there easy to refill and legal to carry gas in.

Should the fuel start to get old , you can always dump it into the towd.

One way,

Hi Steve,
We had a gas 6.5 KW Onan in our 4106, before we got our 7.5 KW Onan Quiet Diesel, and had a 20 gal. gas tank. It would run at least 40 hrs. on 20 gal. using both 13,500 BTU rooftop air conditioners. I would expect you would get at least 40 hrs. on 16 gal. with your 3.5 KW Kohler, probably more so this gives you a ballpark idea if 16 gal. is enough for your expected needs. We found it to be inconvenient to have to fill the gas tank but for the difference in cost between a gas and diesel generator it was something we were willing to live with for 12 years until we found a good used diesel generstor.
Thanks, Sam

Hi Steve, your Kohler should use less than .5 GPH. My Onan 6.5 uses about .65 to .7 GPH at about 60% loading. I've used a 6 gal. outboard tank for several years. Convenient, legal, you should get a full day's run from one. "Used" at a flea market about $10 to $15 bucks. Check the bottom for rust. I use a 5 gal. poly tank for a quick re-fill, for the times I don't want to, or can't go to a gas station. (weather, backpain, demanding woman etc.) I started out with it 'til I could make up my mind to do something else, but it worked so well that it is still here after almost 3 years. Cheers...JJ

Larry Baird (Airhog),
Larry with both your units running, how much fuel per hour does your units use?
By the way you have a very sharp unit,
Larry

Steve,

I have a 135 gallon tank. I use it for genset and webasto. I have an aux pump I bought at NAPA to push fuel to main bus tank if desired. Total fuel carried on board is 280 gals. I can go a long way if I want, and no, I do not use off road fuel in my genset tank since I mix fuel if desired. It's not worth the risk to me.
