I really don't want to do a toad or a trailer simply because I like to drive at 65 or 70 (or more) and drive in the left lanes without raising the brows of cops. As soon as I tow anything, it's now officially 55 and right lanes only. But I do have occasion to want to bring things along that are bigger than will go in my doors.

So the question, are there any laws governing/prohibiting me from making a smallish "platform" sans wheels, that I could simply plug into a heavy tow-hitch tube, thus extending out the rear of my bus maybe 4', that I could lash big but lightweight things to?

Thanks!
Gary

I think moving your lights is the only thing needed here in OH. I think our limit is 2 ft.
Later, Ed.

P.S. If you'd just let the air out of your beach ball you could just throw it under the bed till you get there. ...he..he..he.

Hee hee, funny that you'd mention a big ball... that's EXACTLY what I want to put back there...
here's a photo

It's a big fiberglas radome cover that will be an art project for Burning Man festival... about 5' diameter and about as tall... will I get busted?

Cheers

I'll check out Harbor Freight, thanks Geoff!!
And Fred, trust me, the only combustible things I carry on my bus besides the spray insulation all over it's insides, are diesel and propane. I'm not into having me or my bus "taken away" because of other stupid combustibles! (and I don't smoke tobacco either!!YUCK)
Interesting about Burning Man... these days there are actually Feds with nightvision scopes watching everyone all night and all day too. I actually talked to a few of them last year, they import agents from all over the country to go there and make sure no-one's getting too weird....

Cheers

Probably no problem, just move the lights back if more than 4' or if the load obscures them. My 1st motorhome had a 3'6" bumper extension to carry a Jet Ski, and a boat trailer hitch on that. Long way back from the rear axle and it occasionally drug bottom on encroachments.

Joe Hauler, a company in north San Diego, makes carriers for reciever hitches that may work for you. Depending on weight, they will even make one that will plug in to two reciever hitches on either side of one that you use for towing. For heavy loads its much more stable. It also keeps your regular reciever free so you can still tow a trailer too.

That's terrible, certainly not indicative of a "Free People" The "Police State" increases it's influence by leaps and bounds. Is it for the people's benefit or....?

John,

It's for your own safety.

They are there purely to make sure only the good looking girls take off their clothes......... LOL.

John: For who's benefit is the point. Your safety; that is not even on their minds. The American sheep herd gave away their rights when they sat idly by and allowed the Patriot Act to become law. Now, only the Feds can terrorize us!

Wait till they sneak Patriot Act II thru, maybe that will wake some people up.

What do you mean by "right lane, 55 mph only"? Over here on the East coast anybody driving slower than 75 gets pushed off the road. Trucks, cars & campers towing boats as long as the camper, semis (single & doubles) all hauling _ss! 18 yard dump trucks weaving back & forth across 3 lanes at 75-80 like Ferraris!

Is there really somewhere in this country where folks drive with courtesy & sanity????

If there is, I have not been there. But, if u take the word of a the few cops that frequent these boards, you would believe that everybody drives the speed limit or less. I realize I'm getting older and maybe not in the hurry I use to be, but in my opinion, travel on the freeways and Interstates is becoming a life threatening adventure from the moment u hit the on-ramp

The point is that as soon as I hitch a toad on, a whole new set of laws comes in to effect that can and will be used by an officer to pull me over if I'm going faster than 55 or in any lane but the right hand two. There's enough laws and rules already, and I simply don't want to offer any further reasons for hassles. Not that I ever have been pulled over or expect to be, because I drive within the rules. But busses aren't all that invisible and I don't want to do long hauls at 55. If I'm going 70 with a toad, I can get popped... but without a toad doing 70, a cop will have to pass me by and nail someone else, at least for speeding....

Gary,

Where are you located that the toad restricts you to 55 MPH?

Always good to be informed.

Thanks Gus

My bus is no speed demon, but 60-65mph with toad has never been any trouble, copper-wise, for me. I see RVs with toad blowing along at 70+mph. If 1/2 ton trucks pulling flimsy, overloaded, fifth wheelers can do 70mph, sure think a bus with toad should be able to!

What are you going to make the big ball into?

Gary is quoting the rules for driving in California
The speed limit is 55 for trucks and cars w/trailers.
Everybody else is 65 and 70 out in the boonies.

Erich
