I have a 4104 with a 6-71 and get white smoke when idling and white smoke going down the road on the left side, the right clears up. The DD amnual seems to indicate I need new injectors. Any ideas? |

Before you put new injectors in you should have a compression test done on a couple of clyinders-- if the white smoke is caused by low compression installing new injectors would be a waste of time and money. |

Don't know about the oil, haven't had it long. Before I drove it the 200 miles home, I put 3 qts of Lucas in the oil and added 2 cups of Chemtool to 80 gallons of fuel as it had been sitting about 2 years. It runs fine, but has severe diesel fumes at idle. I reread my post and meant to say that after a few minutes at idle the smoke clears up on the driver'st side and after cruising 20 or 30 miles it clears up going down the road. I haven't driven it since I got it home as it is not legal. I just go out and start it a few minutes a week. |

When I brought my MC9 home it had much the same problem. The bus had been sitting for at least a year possibly two or three. It would put out a bunch of white smoke when I first started it then would smoke badly after warming up when I drove off, for several miles. It also leaked oil out of the air box drain tubes, sometimes a quart at a time. I was afraid it would be needing expensive work soon. I had it serviced, oil change, ect., then I took it for a little drive, to the bus conversion get togather in AZ. and back, about 2500 miles, and it seems to have cured all the problems. Now it runs great, no smoke, no oil loss. I guess these busses like to run and hate to sit. Hope you have similar luck. William |

Hi M&C Mine did the same thing that williams did, once I put it on the road it all cleared up, it also leaked black unburn't diesel at all of the exhaust manifold seams but all of that cleared up once I put it on the road...it just needed to be run HARD !!!! |

Cydny & Michael - If the previous owner used Shell Rotella straight 40wt CF-2 oil, it meets DDA specs for the 6-71 engine. Chevron's Delo 100 40wt CF-2 also meets DDA specs, as does Mobil/DDA Delvac. Here's a link to the DDA lube spec publication, it's a pdf file, well worth printing out and putting in your maintenance binder. http://www.detroitdiesel.com/public/svc/lof/7se270-9912.pdf Main thing is to NOT use multi-weight oil, per DDA. Somebody once said that in order to make a Detroit last, the best way is to "Drive it like you're mad at it!!" They definitely run better when you take them out and go for a couple hour drive - it's VERY hard on them to simply be started and idled for a few minutes every week. HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Frequently lots of white smoke is from too much sitting. The cylinder walls rust (if precautions in Da Book were ignored) and the motor looses lots of compression. Driving a lot MAY remove the rust to the point where the oil will seal the rust pits and compression will get back up , but its a matter of luck. Most old DD will create some white smoke on cold start up , the question of shot culinders is only if they smoke while fully warmed up. You might check the thermostats to see if the warmup is being delayed bu poor thermostat operation. FAST FRED |
