Hmmmm. . . are you talking about the old KW's that were built in the early '50s, or the new ones using a Class 8 cab/chassis with a bus body?

The Kenworth Pacific bus was made during the 1950's with the last one built sometime in 1957 or 1958. One of the most distinctive features of the KW Pacific was the second row of windshields below the dashboard.

Kenworth sold all of their bus business to Gillig Brothers in Hayward, CA. The Gillig School Coach then started to use some of the technology KW developed for their buses. The most telling feature was the high capacity air scoop for the radiator that went through the roof.

Almost all of the production run came standard with the IHC 453/501 I-6 engine with a 5-speed transmission. Some were re-powered in later years to C-series Cummins. Some may have been ordered with Hall-Scott power but those would have been few in number. None of the the KW Pacific buses left the factory diesel powered to my knowledge. I have seen a KW Pacific highway coach that had what looked like a DD 6V-53 in it. The installation looked professional. As to whether or not it left the factory that way I have no idea. But then, I didn't realize KW had ever made a highway coach, so who knows.

If you go to http://www.geocities.com/gilligcoaches/ you will find a website that has a lot of information about KW Pacific buses and their relationship with the Gillig School coach.

Total production run was in the neighborhood of 1000 units. The majority of the sales were in WA with a few going to OR and fewer still to CA. Few if any went any place else. At this late date there are very few of the KW Pacific buses still in existence.

Around 1988, I recall seeing a Kenworth bus, dark blue, in the driveway of the ranger main residence at Lake Cushman State Park, Hoodsport, WA. It looked like it was being used as a conversion bus, or at least the beginnings of one. Of course, it has long since moved from this location, and I know nothing more about it, but maybe this small piece of information might help someone track it down.

Good Luck,
