I have my 06 stripped clean to the metal in the rear seat/toilet area (all of the "library" facilities have been removed completely)now I have some insulating/soundproofing/wood framing to start on (there is a combo entertainment ctr/2 hanging clothes closets/shelving/binage going in against the rear window...wall to wall floor to ceiling. There is a curious little vent on the pass. side about where a persons shoulder would be if seated. It is about 2x4 inches WHAT IS IT? I'd like to be able to cover it completely but w/o knowing it purpose I am hesitant....I took a LONG look thru DaBook to see if I could uncover its value..no luck! There also seems to be a cover or cap on the top of the rear seat bulkhead held on with lots of phillips screws running the entire width of the backseat...does this cap cover the air cleaners or is it just a metal build up to match the lower edge of the rear window....I'd like to remove it as well, every sq.ft. of xtra space makes a difference! Finally....on the lower driverside of the R-seat there is a kick-out that gives clearence underneith for the A/C system, which is coming out as well...so can I cut the kick-out flush with the the rest of the long panel (it is structual) and replace it with metal of equal strength and thickness or do I have to live with the "bubble", it projects into the floor area about 4 inches. BTW & FWIW...... my insulation job is about finished! 1 thing I learned along the way..... IF the inside of your coach is the same temp as the ambiant temp outside (coach sitting in full sun exposure), you have attained insulation equalibrium !! Walking into my shell on a 90degree day the inside UNINSULATED temp would be 15-20 degrees higher....yesterday the temp was 85 inside AND outside when I walked in....opened a couple of windows for cross ventilation and proceeded to work in comfort for a change! ONE LAST ITEM.... I plan on using HOMOSOTE 3/4inch board on my floor as an insulator AND a sound deadener UNDER the carpet pad.....has anyone used a better or lighter material for the same purposes?? |

My 06 was thankfully with out the restroom, so cant help with the 2x4 vent. But the removable plate that is at floor hight under the seat center is very usefull for a starter change , and should be left accessable . Most install an island bed 54 inch gives great room on either side with space for a usefull table for lamp , book and AM coffee. A simple floor raise over the wheel well leaves space for long stuff , your shotgun & fish poles. Really no need to stand at attention getting into the sack , so the space is more valuable than mere headroom. FAST FRED |

That (kick-out) is were the radiator is, so do not fool with that. |

OK...heres what I found out... when the seat cushion & back are removed, there is your basic aluminum stub bulkhead, the alum seat area including an access port for the starter motor and exhaust manifold, then the alum seat back which is capped at the top with a stamped alum cover that runs the FULL width of the coach (which is secured with about 3 dozen #10 phillips head screws)and extends back to the base of the rear window.(or in my case a fiberglass replacement panel which was very well made). I got ahead of the clock yesterday and pulled that stamped alum. cover... the 2x4 vent turned out to be a forced air exhaust for the toilet which fed into the air cleaner intake (methane boost..!?) The cap I removed was insulated with glass wool and covers an air intake on either side of the coach AND a central manifold that feeds the air cleaner boxes or cans as the case may be. After a close inspection it appears that I will be fabricating a new alum. cover that will return about 4inches of height and 10 inches of width to the closet are that will soon occupy the space. The orig. cover is over sized and designed for supporting the shoulder area of the back of the rear seat and not to economize space for a package shelf for instance. I also found the remanents of a former inhabitant under the cover, its not only a great mouse house (well insulated and only 2 entry points) it also is a great hidden collector of road silt...I must have removed 4 lbs of it. (all of it could have been sucked into my air cleaners by a sharp bump in the road, and I would have never guessed that a blocked aircleaner was causing poor engine performance right after a bump!!) I also discovered that the air box manifold had some leaks where it was poorly installed previously. I got about 3/4s of the room back I had the highest hope of recovering, will have a cleaner airbox and manifold when I am finished and I have removed the mousehouse that I would have never found.... and learned a little more about how GM screwed these rockets together back in '64. After I finish pluggin another window tomorrow, if there is time I'll betidying up the rear seat...got a nice alum. handle for the access port and maybe I'll use some of those Dzus buttons in the toolbox to hold'er down with. Thanks again for your help guys, it's always welcome and appreciated here, even if I don't use it for myself. |
