For the past 2 years (and then some) my lovely bride of 27 yrs. and I have been living in her fathers house. It has been like living in a yo-yo. He is in progressive dementia due to adult beverage abuse for 50 yrs. and a head injury caused when his wife tried to kill him by driving his side of the car into a guardrail head-on AFTER she undid his seatbelt while he slept (the man never once(in the 30yrs I've known him) rode ONE INCH w/o his belt on) She was not proscicuted, (which empowered her to try again) and then tried to overdose him on booze and pills, took away his walker and cane and confined him to bed w/o any outside contact... THEN we found out what was happening. It took 6 months for us to convince the courts that SHE was MAX-WHACKO and another 6 months to get her committed to a secure facility. (the results of a 50yr party mentality) This whole time "the olBoy" is slipping farther from a solid grasp of reality. He took a quart of Vodka to the facility where his wife is locked away 3 weeks ago, asceeding to her demands for a drink "if he still loved her". 2 weeks ago I heard him tell his "house call psychologist" that he thinks he is being spied on. Last friday he succumed to pressure from a nursing home maverick salesman, and wrote a check for $2685.00 for a room in a home where he hasn't even been accecpted or approvded for residency (they don't take substance abusers anyway) AND then hid the fact that he did it, knowing he had NO money in the account...! The time has come for him to leave his home and go to an assisted living facility where he can be "monitored" closer for behavior aberations, that WE can not longer control or manage safely. DO NOT WAIT THIS LONG if this happens to you! His lawyer wants to put the house on the market ASAP (money for assisted living)before the rates change or the "buy" fever does. Which means we will be moving to VERY temporary accomadations. Because we were planning on this whole thing coming to a head after the 1th of June.....at which time our 4106 would be close enough to "finished" that we could just move in to it as we had planned to do since we bought it several yrs ago,I guess you could say we are being moved onward a month early. Well that being the case, I am going to let my ISP contract expire, avoiding those costs as well as the phone line cost and the time usually wasted on the net (NOT HERE THOUGH!) SO, tomorrow we start packing and moving STUFF into a storage locker and as soon as it is all in there we are out of HERE....POOF, gone...! Which brings me to this.... Ian has built himself a pretty nifty little site here which everyone benefits from, who visits. Ian...I can't tell you how much I have gained due to your efforts....down the road I hope to give you a heartfelt handshake and a couple of attaboys. I will forever be indebted to you for the experience...THANK YOU..more than "very much" I have connected and re-connected whith a load of GOOD people here and been inspired as well as educated by most of them, enjoyed all of them and now comes the time again to disconnect from you all. I bought a 1964 bus and only own 2 other vehicles, a 1962 & a 1965...all of which are mechanical in technology (not computer controlled) and which I can fix with my own bare hands and feeble mind. We would need to purchase a new laptop PC (space consideration) if we wanted to stay "connected" to the net on the road or in the bus (this is a P-I 75mhgz not satellite capable) and a SAT dish AND ISP service....est cost...$4000.00 PLUS annual ISP contract $1200.00. As good as all you people have been to me (along with the edu-makation) you aren't worth 28 tanks of fuel or 25,000+ miles of wandering pleasure! (so sorry..... I ain't in love with you THAT deeply) Turning back the clock and functioning with less technology and STUFF is now the goal, in 6 months I might not even renew the cell phone contract! Our aim is to be as un-encumbered as we can get, to consume less and conserve more with each passing day until we reach "reality equalibrium", being comfortable and secure with the minimums. (we be no spring chickens any mo ) If this IS in fact my last post or not, it is close enough to say THANKS, I will miss this time sorely and surely. I'd like to meet you all down the road for a cup of coffee and a bag of dough-nuts, keep up the free flow of information between yourselves it is only to EVERYONES benefit. This is a fine place built by fine people and filled with fine people, do YOUR BEST to keep it that way. Wave when you pass...! or KNOCK if we are parked (F-842s...the "S" is for sweet-tooth) (even if the GO light isn't on) A special thanks to HondoJoe Barron, who iced my cake a few weeks back....whatta ball! Hey Joe, Ed is going to take care of my glass problem..Thanks again Bud! (BTW..Ed has my contct numbers..lets stay in touch OK?) Ok....it looks like this goose is cooked and ready to leave the oven... OH yes... the OAE thing..... It stands for "OLD ANTARCTIC EXPLORER".... Palmer is the name of the USARP science staion where I was based. I spent 5 field seasons on the southern icecap as a documentary film maker (and when the funding for that ran out) as a diesel mechanic on a 125ft wooden research ship with SAILS!....you are called an OAE by tradition after you have completed your 2nd trip to the ICE....in all I made over 18 crossings of the Drake Passage and in my final year, our ship was used for "practice" attack straifing by the Argentine Navy and AirForce 2 months before they attacked the Falkland Islands..... after that everything in life was gravy.... know what I mean? That about wraps it up for me.... OAE Palmer... Logging OUT here and FWME..... (finished with main engines) |

Don't give up on an internet connection, NOW is when you will need it most. You mention you have a cell phone, get a data cable and use it for a modem on the road, works great. If that don't float your boat, you can use the internet at most any public library. I have used both, cost is little to none. |

Don, I'm a little weak in this area, can you give more details on the data cable and what all is needed and how it works? Thanks, Larry ps; shame OAE didn't have the property signed over to them before it got this far along. Now there is an attorney in the mix. |

OAE, Libraries and Yahoo worked for me on our trip last summer. It's actually pretty amazing! And free! (And I've had a Yahoo account for years. It was the library part that was the revelation!) You don't even need a computer--the library supplies it. Just sign up for a yahoo account and stay in touch! OAE Sorry to see you leave the board. The other postings had good ideas to stay in touch at no cost to you. If you are ever in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area drop a line. Lots of space to park. Bill |

Dear Good People... Before I unplug this morning...I couldn't help but take one last look at "the bus board". I am TRUELY overwhelmed by your heartfelt expressions of concern and help in staying online and in contact here. I hate to say this (for fear that is could be misunderstood) but clearly I underestimated just exactly how good the membership of this forum is.....I apologize. Your quick efforts were relayed to my wife(at work) and she cried at the outpouring of YOUR concerns. We didn't surrvive 27 yrs. of marrage by living on "easy street", this is just another pothole on the old "destination road" of life, all things change as this will as well, it just requires the only commodity we are ALL short of...TIME. Gotta get to packing......... |

Just a note. We have a star tek phone through verizon. It has a cable set up that hooks to our lap top (standard cheap toshiba) that we use for internet on the road. We simply got a cell phone plan with no long distance/no roaming charges and a dial up service provider. Its not the fastest deal in the world but it really isn't bad. In some areas almost as fast as a hard line. Just a consideration. Cheap and can be used anywhere. DanT |

Hey Bill Leslie, aka OAE Palmer. Ok, I gave up your real name to all of us out here in cyberspace. Sorry! I am a day late & a dollar short. Missed out BNO yesterday, so I will say so-long for you and all of us. Will catch you up on Ed's big ranch in Litchfield, MN. (guess it is a farm up in those parts!) You will have fun stripping the rest of the good stuff off that old 06. Won't be seeing you at Indy 500 this year. But will next year!! Good Luck!! Joe Baron |
