I have a friend with 8v71 DD in a truck that appears to “make oil”. It does not leak, and does not smoke, very tight, unknown miles on it. He says he changes oil and filters at about 5 or 6.000 miles. He says he never has to add more than ½ gallon of oil between changes. This rig is mostly on long hauls. Sometimes he has some real short runs (10 miles) and the oil level appears to go up maybe a ½ gallon. What to check? This truck is in Baja, Mexico and oil testing is not to be had locally. Peter E |

An injector line may be leaking and adding diesel to the oil. |

Have him immediatly send an oil sample to the lab. About $13 for kit at DD dealer. If a jumper line is cracked he could LOOSE engine! DD's run best when lubes with 40wt , not 50% diesel!! Just wipe the dipstick on a clean paper towel & see how the stain grows . If black goo grows , its DD oil , but if it gets wet fast in front of the darker engine oil it could be diluted with fuel. And if it is fuel in the oil (probable), because of where the truck is located, I would just pull the valve covers and look for the leaks on the injector fittings. Even a small leak shows up well usually, and as previously said, DD's love to leak there, and don't run it with diesel in the crankcase. |
